What are Your Thoughts on "BABY IT'S COLD OUTSIDE" being banned by Radio Stations? Do you find it offensive? What other Classic Christmas Songs should or will be banned next?

"It is possible to listen too hard to the lyrics and unnecessarily spoil one’s enjoyment of a song. And if we’re really going to scrutinise Christmas tunes for their inappropriateness in the modern world, where do we stop? Good King Wenceslas glorifies a patriarchal definition of charitable giving that belittles the value of a properly funded welfare state. The 12 Days of Christmas, with its celebration of the senseless carnage of literally dozens of innocent game birds, is offensive to vegans. We Wish You a Merry Christmas alienates people without kin. Santa Claus Is Coming to Town (“he’s making a list, he’s checking it twice …”) directly contravenes GDPR rules. And don’t even get me started on the bullying scenes in Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer, which are very triggering.

Instead, it may just be the problem.

Single radio stations have removed it from playlists. It has not been banned. Radio stations are private businesses and can play what they want, when they want. It is a creepy song. Not creepy like elf on a shelf.

It crossed my mind the other day that 'Funky Cold Medina' is creepy in that way and much more blatant, but it is rarely on the radio, especially not 6x a day during the holidays.

@Xanthe199 Oh, for heaven's sake, it's a dance number in a romantic comedy where two people are falling in love, it used to be considered flirtatious banter. After they finish dancing they look into each others eyes, kiss a little and he sees her home. People with ugly minds will always find ugliness in the most innocent places. Tells me everything I need to know about them.

@Rescue Dog Mama Spot on. It's absurd. They meant nothing even close to why it's been banned. People need to stop looking for something to complain about. Dean Martin, who wrote the song, was known as "The King of Cool" for his seemingly effortless charisma and self-assurance. It was a different era, not at all like today. He was being the persona he had developed in his films and his stage performances. Next they'll ban Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis films as inappropriate. It's so ridiculous I think I'll blast it from my speakers at home. lol

I have no problem with stations banning any song they like, to avoid controversy. "Blue Christmas" was banned for the same reason. They had every right to fire the idiot who broke that rule back then.
Yes, banning might be silly, but radio stations run on the same principle as any other business, and if they lose listeners, they lose advertisers and eventually, no radio station. Better to take a pass, for now, until one day (hopefully) sanity will be restored.
If not, you can always watch "Elf" one of the hundreds of times it'll be on this season, which features the song prominently, being sung by Zooey Deschanel (and Will Ferrel) while she's in the shower, and again while the credits roll (with Leon Redbone www.youtube.com/watch?v=6d-4aOi3...
Or just play Pandora's and Spotify's random Christmas tunes, where it played for us several times the other day, while we were putting up decorations. It's not going away any time soon; enjoy it as much as you like.

@TRCIII Update: Sanity IS being restored, in some cases. In many places where the radio stations announced the ban, public outcry to restore the song outweighed the ban requests by as much as 10-to-1. Almost all of them have put the song back in rotation, by overwhelming listener request. Which is how the market is supposed to work: radio stations, playing what the majority of their listeners want.

I don't believe that radio stations should ban this song, because I think that there exist a paradox between how modern humans with today's social beliefs interpret the social ongoings of the past. All over youtube, you can archival films from the 40s and 50s, where they discussed men and women social etiquette that people today would find very offensive, although they were common place at the time.

To me, the song suggest that the woman wanted to stay over with her boyfriend, but was afraid of what her family would think about her. Perhaps at the time, it wasn't socially accepted that a women would stay over her boyfriend's place, in the belief of that an unmarried woman stating over at men's homes would create a belief of the woman some kind of "slut". Perhaps as well, the man and the woman wanted to spend time together, cuddling by the fire, drinking wine and listening to music, but this social belief at the time created an internal conflict within her as to either conform to social norms, or to be her own her women and make her own choices.

Typical right wing, Opus Dei puritanists who have very little to worry about if this is all they can talk about. Really need to get out and about and see the people that are living on the streets in your towns and cities. Get your representatives to do something about that. Get a life stop reinventing meanings to 60+ year old songs. Honestly!

I feel like Baby It's Cold Outside is not nearly as terrifying as that one song from that Christmas Claymation Special "Santa Claus is Coming to Town"...remember that one song he sings to the children about if they sit on his lap he will give them toys in exchange for kisses smiley

If you sit on my lap today
A kiss a toy is the price you'll pay
When you tell me what you wish for
In a whisper
Be prepared to pay

I mean Come On Son, look at the kids' faces before he lures them onto his lap with the promise of toys

WAY more terrifying than Baby It's Cold Outside.

Yous have to be joking. Banning anything just makes it more desirable. That is fact.
Tell any child "Don't do that" "Because I said so".
Sure as the earth spins and the sun does not come up. They will be trying it at earliest possible time.

Only in America could a simple song like 'Baby its cold outside' be banned? Well from what I read it's just one stupid radio station. And like most US news, they love to make a typhoon in a tea cup.

Rescue Dog Mama. Have you ever looked at what was in a care package for front line first world war fighters? Bought freely from any chemist. Cocaine, Heroine, chocolate and tobacco. It wasn't until the late 20's these became listed drugs. Laudanum, opium in solution was still available for long after. All these thing were freely available to any one with a couple of pennies.
With the world war the supplies were low and the government had to step in to ensure military and hospital supplies.
Then as with ALL governments. Once they got their grubby paws on something, Never want to let go.

Back to the subject of censorship.
Mary Whitehouse was the go to girl to get something banned in the UK. What a stuck up no imagination prig she was.

People can watch whatever they like...but I think most of it leads to mental, and emotional problems. America's crime rate can be directly tied to the invention of the television, and violent content, and video games. What's the average IQ? Most people are not intelligent enough to discen that what they see on video, is not an acceptable way to live. Most people learn how to LIVE , by watching tv. How to act, what to do, and what they can get away with. It's a great training tool for future sociopaths. If it was up to me, I'd blow ALL of them up...and let people learn life the old fashioned way...by reading...and from other people. Learn life by living it...... "While there isn’t complete consensus in any scientific field, a study conducted showed more than 90% of pediatricians and about two-thirds of media researchers surveyed agreed that violent video games increase aggression in children."

The song is just a reminder of a time when that kind of sexist attitude was considered normal. I don't think anyone should ban any song, book, or album. Just choose not to listen to it. A radio station choosing not to play a song is not "banning" it. Banning is a governmental action.

Way too much overreaction on both sides of this.

“If there is a bedrock principle underlying the First Amendment, it is that government may not prohibit the expression of an idea simply because society finds the idea offensive or disagreeable.”

@Flickfan His sci-fi raised all sorts of questions about sexuality and morality, well ahead of his time. "Stranger in a Strange Land"--an objective look at societal morés from the viewpoint of someone who was raised by another race of beings. "All You Zombies", about a person who created himself, by seducing and impregnating himself, due to being intersex and manipulating time travel. "I Will Fear No Evil", about an old, straight man whose brain is transplanted into a young, attractive, female body...and is led to question the nature of sexual attraction, and how much body or mind control your viewpoint and physical abilities. "Friday" led you to evaluate the "personhood" of clones...and of course, there's Dora, who is an artificial intelligence, but who also later becomes installed in a "real" body, leading you to question the nature of sentience, long before we talked of the singularity or transcendence.

@3UN01A Sadly, most of them are only books. Sorry to interject those on a movie site, but the topic was Heinlein, and most of his stuff has never been made into movies. (Too controversial? Not enough action?) Whatever the reason, he was a great writer, but the only time I've ever seen them make his books into movies ("Puppet Masters", "Starship Troopers") they've botched it badly. Like most Stephen King movies they used to try to interpret. So, I've always been a little grateful they've never tried for the really good stuff.
In any case, sorry you won't find most of those books adapted to the screen on the movie site.

People are conditioned to believe anyone that relies on the Lord is nuts or stupid or even evil because they do not believe as the world does.. What you see in movies and tv is not realistic.
