I swear by Video Downloader Prime in opera - it absodanglutely captures everything. 
Maybe strip the extention version from your browser. Update everything. Reinstall new clean version. Perhaps even snag a new browser and install the new VDP on it? [Opera offers a built-in VPN.]

I use the Firefox add-on, its good.
Check your DH settings, there is one to select 'browser' or 'companion app'. It normally works through the browser, recently there was an upgrade which changed the settings.
@Rescue Dog Mama In settings / behaviour. Choose Browser.
Don't forget to 'save' or it all goes back to default.

i just use loader.to/ if i need to download something. some hosts have a download button already though

are you trying to download from clipwatching ? cause if you are , clipwatching no longer use mp4 player, they use HLS player now which the mp4 file get convert into TS / m3u files, if you use VLC addon with your VDH, it should work.

Applian have a good set of apps, including Video Capture which grabs the video off your screen. Quite cheap and very handy.

Please if this topic cannot be discussed here because of rules, feel free to delete it. I have been using VideoDownload Helper for the last few years and it worked great. All of a sudden it won't work and said I needed a companion app, which I downloaded and tried again. Nothing... is this still free or is there another option.... TIA
