I often get musical actor Dick Powell confused with dapper William Powell, yet it was Bill not Richard who Carol was married to before Gable.

The liberal activist Jane Alice Peters known famously as Carol Lombard Gable, wife of Freemason Clark Gable & former wife of Dick Powell, who himself had previously been with Jean Harlow before she too died young. Carol was queen of the screwball comedies & a famed dramatic actress whose life was cut short when her plane crashed into a mountain in WWII after a war bond drive in early 1942, killing her instantly at age 33.
Carol was a known as a shrewd business woman that didn't believe women should stay home, but should work, like it, and not to dwell on being burned but to "stand up & take it like a man". She did not like the "paternalized" studio system & therefor was one of the few independent freelance actors who included in her contract 20% of the gross of all her film distribution including total control of her image & likeness.
Her final picture was with Jack Benny called To Be Or Not To Be, which was finished just as her plane crashed. She was scheduled to do another picture called They All Kissed The Bride, but tiny Joanie Crawford got the role upon Carol's death. She donated all her salary from the picture to the Red Cross to cover the costs of the difficult recovering of the bodies off the mountain. To this day, parts of the plane remain on the mountain where Carol & her mother were killed.
