This was goddamned interesting - I ate it all up!

I always thought of the word balaclava as having come into US English common use only recently when the Russian female political punk band "Pu55y Riot" were arrested. They always wore Balaclavas when they played to protect their identities. I never heard the word until they were arrested after playing in in a church and really singing the riot act about the corrupt Putin. After the incident, to my eyes and ears, the word was everywhere, in the US that is. Now people say, I am going to buy a Balaclava. I never heard anyone say that word before! In fact, balaclavas still seem to be associated with violence and terrorism, otherwise, why hide your face?

I live where it snows and in windy winter, everyone and their uncles are wearing Balaclavas! You have to cover your face entirely. I still jump if someone walks towards me while wearing one. Eesh!

Thank you for this interesting article! I should pay more attention to the AWOD. ...

Awesome. Thank you, Box, for word origination. Language is so important and must be preserved. English is a great communicator at times, but the preservation and origination of all languages are essential!!

My grandmother talked about knitting balaclavas for the troops in WW2, and she made one to match my school uniform when I was a kid.
They are good in winter but terrorists and bank robbers made them unpopular.

And soon there may be another battle of Balaklava, which could be an amphibious landing place when the Ukrainians re-take Crimea.

Greeks paid a big blood tribute for their participation in Crimean expedition and a horrifying aftermath for the Greeks living in the area called today Ukraine and around Krasnodar, to the southern Russian border, in the roots of Caucasus.... I bet many of us would not even wanna know about details. Despite this, the encyclopedic meme is very nice!
