About me:
I'm often accused of acting like I don't care... It's not an act.

A huge fan of horror - Zombies especially. Will watch any Horror Anthology I come across, no matter how bad.

Also a fan of Apocalyptic/Disaster, Marvel, Science-Fiction and Fantasy.

I will chat with almost anyone about almost anything.

I tend to piss some people off, but thankfully my raging narcissism stops me caring.

About 30 years ago, I lived in a little town in Louisiana; my wife and I both worked for an Air Force base there. I was out hunting for eggnog on Christmas Day because we’d let ourselves run out. Coming out of the store, I was a little grumpy, because they were all out, and I like my nog during the holidays.

As we were walking to the car, we saw a young couple, carrying a very small baby, standing on the corner. They weren’t dressed warmly, and seemed a little bit in shock. We “sort of” knew the gal; she had babysat our kids once, back in the day, now was married to a young Air Force guy with a kid of her own, so we felt comfortable asking them how things were going.

Their trailer had burned down just that morning, and they’d lost everything except what they had on. It put my “eggnog problem” in true perspective.

We took them home, I scrounged for food, and to get them something warm that would fit them, looked for something for a diaper substitute. My wife started making calls, and the third person she reached, said, “Call the Chaplain’s office.” She did, had an Air Force Chaplain on the line, who we knew personally, in 15 minutes. He asked her a few questions about their ages and such, then assured her, “I’ll take care of everything. Bring them by the Chapel at 3:00 p.m.”

@TRCIII That was a wonderful thing to do for others in need. You should be very proud you were able to give a new family a good start for the following year. Sometimes just knowing that there is someone on your side, willing to listen, understand and offer support is often enough to turn someones life around. If only there were more like you and your extended community.

@DemandingFemale We don't feel like we really "did" anything for that couple; we were the agents, in the right place at the right time. You can see God's hand in that or random chance, but the end result is that we felt like we were incredibly blessed simply to be witnesses to such a display of people's generosity. And a reminder of what Christmas--and every day--should really be like.
