The Great Gatsby was published in the midst of the roaring 20s and is at once defined by that decade, and by a crushing sense of nostalgia. Not only are star-crossed adulterers Jay (Leonardo DiCaprio) and Daisy (Carey Mulligan) driven back into their own histories, but the novel itself is deliberately set a few years earlier than its publication, in 1922, appraising its own era up-close.
This adaptation of the novel, with a hip-hop soundtrack, accentuates the distance between our time and that of F. Scott Fitzgerald.

Bugsy Malone (1976)

Alan Parker’s teenage mobster musical Bugsy Malone feels so right, when it could have been so wrong. And perhaps it’s partly why we look back on the 1920s with such fondness, imagining them, entirely falsely, as a more innocent time. Here, Jodie Foster plays jaded nightclub singer Tallulah and she brings just the same jaded, brittle quality to the role as she did to her teenage prostitute in Martin Scorsese’s unrelenting Taxi Driver (1976), which was released the same year. She was just 13.
Famously, Parker cast the villain of the piece, Fat Sam, by stepping into a New York classroom and asking for “the naughtiest boy in class”. And at the risk of shattering childhood illusions, the prop guns actually shot ping-pong balls, not custard. The rest is movie magic.

The Artist (2011)

In 1927, silent film star George Valentin is posing for pictures outside the premiere of his latest hit film when a young woman, Peppy Miller, accidentally bumps into him. Valentin reacts with humor to the accident and shows off with Peppy for the cameras. The next day, Peppy finds herself on the front page of Variety with the headline "Who's That Girl?"
Later, Peppy auditions as a dancer and is spotted by Valentin, who insists that she have a part in Kinograph Studios' next production, despite objections from the studio boss, Al Zimmer. While performing a scene in which they dance together, Valentin and Peppy show great chemistry, despite her being merely an extra. With a little guidance from Valentin (he draws a beauty spot on her, which will eventually be her trademark, after finding her in his dressing room), Peppy slowly rises through the industry, earning more prominent starring roles.

Tony Curtis and Jack Lemmon are musicians on the run from Chicago mobsters, dressing up as women to avoid identification, and to mingle with Monroe’s band. All would run smooth were it not for the temptations of romance, sex and expensive yachts.
And as Curtis and Lemmon find out what it feels like for a girl in the permissive 20s, they gain an insight into Bow’s unhappiness: heartbreak, harassment, high-heels and all.
