Favourite Christmas Film (1334 views, 83 replies)
@udahntiudahndo hmmm I will have to check this one out... it's impossible that I could have missed a Christmas film ;)
thanks for sharing xx
*searches Fred Claus*
It's a wonderful life
Scrooge (1951)
A Christmas story
National lampoon's Christmas vacation
The Santa Clause
Home alone
Bad Santa
The ref/ aka Hostile hostages
In that order...
@MarkRowley Excellent list and much like mine.
Watching National lampoon's Christmas vacation is a ritual this way every Christmas when we go to my husband's Uncle's during the holiday for the annual X-mas dinner - this film is literally always played after we eat and before the real party begins.
I know it by heart LOL
I have tried to squeeze in DVDs of new Christmas films to replace National lampoon's Christmas vacation and he did manage to skip a year without watching it but it's back to the same old same old.
I love the holidays though and everything about Christmas season. The best films are the older ones although there was a good one released in recent years - when I remember it , I will share.
Thank you for sharing yours xx
@3UN01A I'm a Christmas fanatic, so I record every film and special so I'm never truly reliant on TV stations or streams. Christmas vacation is one of those that gets a viewing a good few times before it's all over
@MarkRowley Great list and a new one for me (The Ref) which looks perfect. What year is A Christmas story from?
@---BOX--- 1983, it's a classic

The ref is just one of those gems that's never given a fair airing and Dennis Leary is brilliant in it.

I'm with Mark
National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation
Home Alone
My Favorites, these movies always bring me back to simpler times :)
The Long Kiss Goodnight
Not exactly a Christmas movie, but Christmas is in it and it's one of my favorite movies.
The only one on the list or mentioned here so far that I have seen is The Nightmare Before Christmas and I like that one too.
@delamitri New for me D. and goes on the watch list - some great actors in it. TNBC was a big hit in our house for many years but kids grow up. Still I might get them to give it one last go.
Some good ones mentioned here but gotta say:
A Christmas Story- Can't go wrong with 'Electric sex' in the window!
Die Hard- Yippee ki yay motherforker
@---BOX--- It's a classic.
"Fra-gee-lay. It must be Italian!"
It may not be as quotable as The Princess Bride, but for this American upper midwestern raised former 1970s kid it was immensely relatable. Hope you enjoy.
@DemandingFemale I haven't seen Elf so I'll be checking it out. Gremlins is a classic.
@DemandingFemale I missed a few films that year due to family commitments DF but I am looking forward to catching up. I'll let you know.
For those of you who like short Christmas stories this is a comedy belter, written by and staring Chris o'Dowd...10 minutes of class. It's from a series by Sky.

Elf.
SANTA'S COMING !!!!!!!!!!!
Buddy the Elf what's your favourite colour?
Actually in my world it's not just for Christmas, I watch it anytime of the year.
@⭐️janerosity⭐️ Everyday can be Christmas in your house Jan. Great idea. I think Coca Cola would be interested in buying the rights to that slogan!
Although Christmas films are usually family comedies with a touch of romance and good cheer, I am all in favour of mixing things up a bit especially when it comes to a good crime thriller.
We didn’t have a cinema in our town growing up, so when my older brother came home on his holidays from university in Dublin, I used to quiz him about what films he saw. It must have been on his Christmas visit home that he told me about a film called “The Silent Partner” and years later when I saw it (on VHS) I was as impressed with the film as I was with his story telling.
The screenplay was penned by Curtis Hanson, who would later be responsible for L.A. Confidential and stars two of my favourite actors, Elliot Gould and Christopher Plummer who are on top form here. It is a bank heist thriller set during the Christmas period but not everything goes to plan. Tense, twisty and terribly intelligent with the added bonus of an early appearance by John Candy, this film won’t disappoint.

Hey RB - great recommendations. I had Rare Exports and Krampus down on the "alternative" Christmas list but I had missed How the Grinch Stole Christmas and the last one Anna and the Apocalypse looks like a fun one to add. Tx
@---BOX--- You're welcome. If you've not seen the first three, I hope you enjoy them. I just watched "Rare Exports" again. :)
Another Christmassy feel film from down under is ....
Better Watch Out (2016)
When you think the suburbs, you think safety, but this holiday night the suburbs are anything but safe. Ashley (Olivia DeJonge) thought this babysitting job was going to be an easy night, but the night takes a turn when dangerous intruders break in and terrorize her and the twelve-year-old boy, Luke (Levi Miller), she's caring for. Ashley defends her charge to the best of her ability only to discover this is no normal home invasion.
Don't investigate too much as you may find spoilers about.

@---BOX--- I'm going to watch this one tonight.. exactly the kind of thing I was looking for, and thanks for including a summary/mentioning about the spoilers.. perfect :) I'll read the comments after, lol

It's between "A Xmas Story" and "a xmas carol ",the old version with Alister
Sims(not sure name of old actor)OH NO I FORGOT "A NIGHTMARE BEFORE XMAS"!!!the best of all!!
Well the majority of my Favourite Christmas movies are already listed, So I will share with you my Favorite Christmas Skit from SNL
Holiday Heart ♥︎
Love this movie! Hadn't seen it in years and then ended up waking up to it the other day, (autoplay on youtube...). It's good if you're feeling down and/or miss your family. (& Ving Rhames is so good in it! A different kind of role..)
Just watched one of the best suspense thrillers from 70's New York that is set during the Christmas period. It has the tandem of leading actor, Robert Redford and director Sydney Pollack in the film of "Three days of the Condor" from 1975. The Twin Towers had a prominent role in the film.
I believe this was the first movie I had seen which really challenged me to understand what was going on, as we are given mostly the POV of Robert Redford, member of the "academic CIA" and all round thinking woman's hero. The cast is rounded out by Faye Dunaway, Cliff Robertson and the wonderful Max Von Sydow as the man with no scruples nor sides and "how much" is the important question in his game.
I suppose these were strange times in American politics and I suppose the film reflected some of the paranoia that was going around. 9/10

Looking for a film with that Christmas feeling that everyone will be dead before we get to the cake, then look no further.
Considered to be the first “slasher” film before “Hallowe’en”, it is clear that John Carpenter had his notebook out when he watched this one.
BLACK CHRISTMAS (1974)
dosmovies.com/watch_movie/Black_Christma....
Maybe it's time for some super heroism in the form of Tim Burton's Batman Returns (1992). Michael Keaton dons the Caped Crusader's suit once again, the action is top notch and the villians get all the best lines.
Catwoman on the trials of finding a suitable date - "It's the so-called normal guys who always let you down. Sickos never scare me. At least they're committed."
Sit back and let the entertainment begin.

As he did with Tom Hanks and the Polar Express, Robert Zemeckis teams up this time with Jim Carrey to play Ebenezer Scrooge and the three Ghosts of Christmas in the Dicken's classic A Christmas Carol (2009) using the magic of motion-capture technology.
dosmovies.com/watch_movie/A_Christmas_Ca....
@---BOX--- OH NO, JIM CARREY as Scrooge?I can see him as one of the ghosts, but not Scrooge! Also, he could have played the COOKED GOOSE.that would be no stretch for him.
Looking for a bit of holiday humour ... then look no further.
Planes, trains, and automobiles (1987) from the 80s teen guru John Hughes has Steve Martin and John Candy as two strangers/odd couple getting stranded together during a storm in Wichita and their adventure-filled fun ride involving trains, planes, and automobiles.
A classic.

@bleemmst Thanks for your recommendation, and it seems to be a popular one as it has been mentioned more than once here. For anyone who may like to see Mr. Willis do what he does best, then get yourself over to ...

I just watched this one last night:
A Christmas Horror Story
dosmovies.com/watch_movie/A_Christmas_Ho....
It's really good! :)
@---BOX--- I should've looked, but admittedly I didn't. I was too overcome with being happy at finding another Christmas horror film for my collection. Sorry! :)
EDIT: I just looked through the thread and don't see it mentioned, so I would've posted it anyways....
I completely forgot about this one, and it's one of my favourites:

Merry Christmas, Mr. Lawrence is a 1983 British-Japanese wartime drama film directed by Nagisa Oshima, produced by Jeremy Thomas and starring David Bowie, Tom Conti, Ryuichi Sakamoto, Takeshi Kitano and Jack Thompson.
The soundtrack was as impressive as the film. Here is the main theme ...
@---BOX--- Do we have that film?(isn't that an Australian hat Bowie is wearing?Cuz I had one, years ago.)
@clarachan1355 dosmovies.com/watch_movie/Merry_Christma....
The hat was a bit before my time, sorry.
The Nutcracker and the Four Realms (2018)
"... a great story it’s cross between Alice in Wonderland,The Chronicles of Narnia
it helped get me into the Christmas spirit with a wonderful big named cast from Mackenzie Foy to Morgan Freeman and not forgetting Keira Knightley as Sugar Plum with bright and colorful costumes and great CGI special effects." (PinkTinker comment)

And the last one for this season. The 5th of January is the celebration of the coming of the Three Kings (Wise Men) in Spain, with their presents for Jesus and the good children of the country. This is the closest in name but it is very good so I hope it keeps you amused until next November/Christmas.
Three Kings (1999)
At the end of the Persian Gulf War, four U.S. soldiers plan to steal a secret stash of Kuwaiti gold. Instead, they find themselves getting involved with civilians being executed by Saddam Hussein and left defenseless by the U.S. military.
George Clooney, Ice Cube and someone called Wahlberg
dosmovies.com/watch_movie/Three_Kings....
THREE KINGS was very good. But my favorite Xmas movie is"Barefoot in the Park"cuz to do that, hop in the park, obviously Xmas is OVER.Another of my faves for Xmas is"The Long Hot Summer"--same reason. Also, one good Xmas film is "Mutiny on the Bounty"cuz it takes place in TAHITI.--best place to celebrate Xmas!--or,to just FORGET IT.
You know what rich people do at Xmas?Go to hot, beautiful, sunny resorts.--after buying "The Resort Collection from Valentino".Once you got tons of moolah, you can afford to pretend you never even tried Xmas as a religious holiday, cuz being so rich is like"Xmas every day!"--sigh.
THAT'S how I would like Xmas,as (maybe)Trump's next wife. We're the same age, don't knock it!- -First I have to "subtly knock-off Melania---"you think an OO-ZIE OR AK-15 sounds subtle enough?
(She was a MODEL,they're dead from the moment they stop eating completely! She won't even notice.)I could handle Trump; I taught cooking to schizophrenics,
no diff!--And we'll have a French chef any way.--If I married money.I'm no longer eating AMERICAN FOOD.I think he's still cute.---All multi-millionaires are cute!
YES THEY ARE!

These are some of my favourite festive season films; some from childhood and others from watching with children. All of them remind me of what is good and bad about human nature, no matter what time of the year it is.
Do you have a favourite film for the holiday season? Does it have special significance?
Let us know what it is and why. All posts are welcome.
