[Bug] Comment Text Length on Index (1162 views, 27 replies)
@Dr.Evil If this could be implemented for the movie pages themselves too that would be great.
And since we're on the subject, how hard would it be to have a limit on the size of a comment all together? Like the Leaving Neverland example he showed, it just got out of hand there. Just an idea
Technically to implement such a feature is easy, and there are multiple techniques to get that done. The most important thing about this one is to decide the rules, of what the limit will be.
(From developers point of view)
Let's hope the dev takes this suggestion, and acts on it :)
Technically there's a limit in the html form and in the database. Somebody asked me long lime ago to increase the limit, now you're asking the opposite. :) I will leave this as is. Just report long and useless comments.
Oh, I can see now, that it's set to:
maxlength="5000"
You're the boss, if you think it's not too much, so it stays.
@WingTsun That's not what he meant.
He meant that he changed it so that people could leave longer comments when it was already restricted, and now he's being asked to change it back to what it was originally.
Potentially, someone else can come along after this and say it needs to be longer AGAIN. It's a potentially endless circle of changing things, which makes no sense for something like this, which really isn't a big problem.
So reporting the long comments for removal is a better option at this time.
:)
@ What I have in mind about this is a compromise for this whole situation :)
I am NOT talking about changing the MAX Allowed length, but about the output.
Comment text-length can stay as it is now.
What I am suggesting is to add a "Show More" button for the really long ones :) That would satisfy both parties. Then you can still leave a comment as big as you please, and at the same time it will not stretch the comment page too much. Plus eleminate the need to report those.
If you still decide this is not necessary, please delete or close this thread, so I can move on a different BUG Report. I do not want to spam the forum with more than 1 active thread on reports.
@WingTsun That's a good idea, but I don't decide these things so I'll tell Doc to have a look.
Thanks. :)
Show more is a good idea. Thanks.
Also as a programmer, please read this en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/You_aren... I like this principle lol
@Dr.Evil I am aware of this, thanks :)
The reason I still persist about this update is I know that this will be necessary to deal with sooner or later, when some users will start to abuse this (which will happen). Ofc you can just delete all of the posts manually everytime they popup, however this change would save this effort for admins/mods, and in the same time users will not need to suffer waiting time, while someone does delete it :)
So I do not think "YAGNI" applies to this one :P
@Dr.Evil I'd like to see the show more implemented. There are currently users who leave long and sometimes useless comments. There are also the comment wars to think of, so maybe a "show replies" option would be nice too.
Imo both long comments and the comment wars are a current problem so in regards to the Wikipedia page, I think we do need it. But that's just my opinion and as always you're the boss, sir. Just wanted to give some input.
@rickgrimesrocks Oh and btw I really like the "jump to" section you've added on the movie pages. Love it!
@rickgrimesrocks Thank you for supporting this suggestion :) This is something that we will need sooner or later, and the "sooner" is already here ^^

Greetings!
Noticed and issue and decided to report it.
Problem:
There is a bug on index page comments, where any text length is allowed. There is no limit.
See it in the screenshot here: ibb.co/c6nC29N
Solution:
You should apply a limitation to character lentgh output of comments there. You could use the same principle you currenly have on the "Show Plot" function, where users can click it to reveal the text.
So, basically the logic: "If string length is larger than , shorten and show "Read More" button, else show the string normally".
As a developer my-self I have a simple suggestion there.
I asume the system is based on PHP & JS. You could do this like:
pastebin.com/35ARVnT4
Hope this is somewhat helpful, thank you.
