This is a quick warning. Most of us know about cryptocurrency. Apparently unscrupulous websites that you visit can use your computer to mine cryptocurrency without your knowledge. The initial idea was that because everyone hates and blocks popups, websites could tell their users that they were getting rid of ads but to pay for the content they would be using the user's computer to mine cryptocurrency while they were on the website. UFC dot com (the place you can watch fights) just got busted for doing this to their users without telling them.

For some top ad blockers: github.com/hoshsadiq/adblock-noc...

Virus protection does wonders my friends. smiley smiley smiley It's all found, reported, blocked automatically.
Torrent sites are the biggies that are doing this.
Some of my favorite sites that I take links from are now doing this too as the links I take have the coin miners attached to the main site and it tries to install itself on my computer ALL THE DAMN TIME. smiley I use Norton 360 Premier Edition. I got it torrent dl'd so its free for me forever..
Once the miner was found and reported, its been a okay from there. Now I just get popups saying the JSCoinminer Download # has been blocked. IDK if I can link torrents here, but if anyone likes, lmk, & I can p2p you the N360PE file smiley I use uTorrent to get the torrents. smiley

@∞Aces∞ The Pirate Bay is doing it. But they let everyone know first. Their using the Monero javascript miner as a testing procedure to see if it's better than ads for revenue. & KAT is around still. Google em. They just changed their domain to .to
I got 5 torrent sites I usually frequent. smiley
Hi all! My eldest daughter introduced me to the P2P "life" I used several of those sites and I registered in the TPB too. Since about 3 years have been using FrostWire. I don't use bitcoin, would my PC or mobile be in danger to be infected by that "miner" ? I don't quite understand how the infection works, but will check in case I notice any of the symptoms you mention here, specially my mobile.

I use Avast antivirus, paid it too smiley after they sent me a special offer.
I checked in the site and my account to see what it (allegedly) protects me from and there is a recent mention of that "Monero" Miner or whatever. I am adding the link in case it is useful for anyone here.
blog.avast.com/cryptocurrency-mi...

BTW I use goggle chrome too so was quite worried when reading your comments.

Since you are all here, let me tell you that I LOVE this site. ...

@Marthig The miner thing isn't really an infection. It's supposed to be a good thing that replaces those annoying pop up ads. An over simplified way of explaining cryptocurrency like Bitcoin is Computers guess a number. If they get it correct you win nerd money. If they are wrong they guess again. The faster the computer the faster you can guess. Over time the guessing gets harder as more people try guessing. Like it started guess 1-10, then guess 1-20, then guess 1-100, guess 1-1000, etc. After a while the guessing part called "mining" gets really difficult. So it needs a more powerful computer to guess it. Someone figured out that having a whole lot of normal computers could give you the same result as one Super computer. If you go to certain websites now, they may want to connect your computer to their network to guess these numbers. It's your computer, no one should be able to use your computer for anything without you knowing about it. ...

@Dr.Evil After typing all that I remembered that it actually met the legal definition of hacking, so it's against the law. definitions.uslegal.com/c/comput...

@PaddyWhack @PaddyWhack - Thank you for the explanation, sounds a bit like when cooperating with the SETI a while back, still if I got it right, I think I should be safe, my internet connection is through a WiFi system. Agree too about considering it as malware. Thank you too to @Dr.Evil
Bye then

@Marthig P.S.: I checked some of the details in the Avast AV logs and there were three instances of malware blocked, two were sites that wanted to download the "miner". I've never been to those sites so as @Craymoss said above, virus protection does wonders

I am terrified of torrents years ago my daughter at the time 14, hooked up and got a bunch of video mostly music videos. A lot of mislabeled videos that were porn and not what they claimed to be. My computer slowed to a stop blue screen almost everyday at least once. Several formats. I had pop ups auto dialers all kinds of crap. I finally just forbid them. I want to see the movie "Believe in the light". The faith based one not the energy guru.I have been told it is on torrent sites. To scared to go look. I love my computer lol.

Have any of you encountered the "Microsoft Critical Alert"? Still get this sh*t regardless of Adblocker Plus? I do the Control, Alt, Delete, but there must be a better solution no?

@𝓜𝓸𝓾𝓼𝓮*🐭 If you're fast enough you can close those popups before they load completely. That's how I avoid them.

@PaddyWhack Yes, I do close them right away, but is there nothing to just avoid it.... and thanx I so appreciate your help :)

@PaddyWhack Thank you! I have used all the methods on this site, problem is I guess is that I am lazy :) Maintenance isn't one of my strengths. Have to be more vigilant in the future for sure! :)
