"Spend a Penny"

"I need to spend a penny" = "I need to go to the toilet"

This refers to the use of coin operated locks on public toilets, first introduced circa 1850. It was used mostly in the UK and mostly by women because men's urinals were free of charge!!

@DemandingFemale I had never heard that expressioin before. As far as not charging men, I know it's sexist, but men can, and DO, urinate anywhhere. On a long trip, we often just pull to the side of a highway, and let fly on the side of the car away from traffic. We are better equipped for that. I would have thought that women's urinals would have been free, as they are not as indiscreet as men are.

@bondojoe Caught short and letting fly in the UK and seen doing so could mean an indecent exposure charge. Possible ending with you being listed on the sex offenders list! Stupid, But true.

@DemandingFemale Here's on old law. A woman can ask a police officer to use his coat to cover her while she squats next to her rear carriage wheel to relieve herself. Don't think that one has been rescinded yet.
In the mens the urinals were free but the seats still cost a penny.

@Egor17 We still have an icecream van Friday or Saturday and more often during the school holidays.

@saxon901 We had them about every 15-20 mins all week. 3 competing companies, all with Italian names, so they were called 'tally vans'. You could tell which one it was as they played different jingles as they came in the street.

@Egor17 When I was young, it was the same in summer, and the icecream man would steer with one hand and ring a bell out the window with the other. Later Mr Whippy vans appeared playing Greensleeves. Good times.

@alvinjfrazier "Put a potato in yer shoe and beat it " I get the beat it bit, but the potato??
"Gotta see a man about a horse" We must be the poor cousins coz it was a dog not a horse.

@Egor17 Sorry that you disagree, but yeah. Potato and horse. Most slang is regional anyway.
