If I hear that one more time..... (994 views, 35 replies)

My latest project is re-covering a sofa for my lounge. Before I get to the point you should know that - if I say so myself - I am very clever at sewing, but it's not something I LOVE to do, just a very useful skill.

Today a friend I've not seen for a while came to visit, and on seeing what I was doing said the following...

"I didn't know you could sew, but now I do I have a job for you that YOU WILL LOVE"

Happens whenever someone discovers what I can do.
This was followed by a conversation I've had many many times, where the friend with the job proceeds to tell me how easy said job will be - when, as they have no clue how to do it themselves, they also have no idea if it will be easy.

And then when I say they need to either send me a picture (if it's furniture) or bring for me to look at (if it's a garment) before I agree to do it (I know my limitations) they say "I will pay you".
Like I am going to spend 3 days covering a sofa or making a prom dress for free. And as if their 'offer' to pay is going to mean that I can suddenly develop the ability to make a something I can't for free.

@clarachan1355 Oh ye. I done electrical/electronic installation and repairs. Took a few years before realising, Just charge more than a commercial company. My off time is worth more than company pay.
Didn't take too long before I wasn't asked anymore.

I did body work and painting on automobiles and tractor trailers all of my life. I have probably painted SOMETHING for everyone that I have known. A motorcycle tank...a car, a ski-doo, a snowmoblie...etc. I enjoyed my work, but I always heard.." Joe, I've got something I want you to do" It usually wasn't an invitation for sex.

@bondojoe Did they then tell you exactly how you should do it and how much you will love it?

Or is that just me?
I never get offered sex either... I'd rather have the money lol.

@⭐️janerosity⭐️ Well, they told me how they wanted it done...but how much THEY would love it...not me! I usually just charged them for materials...being family. And I enjoyed doing it anyway. I had to charge most of my friends a fair price or there would have been no end to it. I emjoyed working almost as much as sex! LOL! ALMOST!

@CollideDuhScope I never did a Guitar! Now you make me wish that I had! My uncle paintd guitars for members of my family, but I don't remember him doing any portraits. Anyway...that was 50 years ago. Some people are real artists with an airbrush. I have copd now, and can't go near the stuff. I wonder if your face is still on the guitar?

@---BOX--- My general inclination is to do whatever I want to...if I can...and then suck down some oxygen if I'm at home. If I am out...I just hope for the best. It HAS slowed me down. I can do almost anything that I want to, but it drops my ozygen levels into the 80's. Then I do some breathing tricks to bring it back up. I've noticed a change in my cognizant abilities, my attention span, and my interests, over the past couple of years. It's slowly destroying my organs. No one lives forever. I'm in no hurry to leave here, but it's going to happen. I figure I will either die, and know nothing at all, or find that there's more. It's been a lot of fun. I don't get NEARLY as upset about things as I once did! LOL!

@bondojoe Good on ya ... that is the spirit and if you slow down just wait to get your breath back - I take it you don't have oxygen outside with you.

I don't get NEARLY as upset about things as I once did! I spilled my tea when I read that! Lucky we socialists have the mellowed Joe.

I have a friend who has EPOC from smoking and working in unhealthy conditions. He is on the inhalers but takes a backpack of O2 when he goes out. I think he accepts that he needs it now but at the beginning he couldn't - he was too embarrassed with the attention of the people.

He says the best thing he has done was to do a breathing exercise course and do exercise (on a static bike and using light weights 3 or 4 kgs).

@---BOX--- I can't get Medicare to pay for anything...they have tested me twice. They do it while you sleep. My oxygen has to go below 88, and stay there for 10 minutes while I am sleeping. I don't need as much oxygen while I am sleeping, so I had to buy my own oxygen concentrator, and tank for use at home. It goes down to about 90 when I am sleeping. Anything below 92, and oxygen does not penetrate the red blood cell barrier. So I have to use the oxygen at night too. But Medicaid insists on 88. They want you to be dying, before they actually help you. So I said Fuck Them, and helped myself. I've got some other health problems going..LOL I have degenerative muscle disease, an autoimmune diseas that is eithr MS or something just like it. I haven't let them draw any spinal fluid yet. They have been doing tests on me for about 15 years. My blood pressure is ALWAYS giving me trouble. ...

@bondojoe No worries - I can sniff out a Trumpite at 200 metres so the world may sleep safer knowing that I am on the wall (on the Mexican side of course - I don't have a green card)

No,just the opposite;i taught cooking & baking to adults for many years, but my friends are NOT INTERESTED in nutrition or cooking.(unless its my sister.)Now that i am retired,i want to give advice, but I live in Oregon, the pizza, junk food(and beer)capital of the USA.Everyone here gets VERY FAT.PIZZA TOTALITY!Since i moved back,me too!(but i have been depressed.Depression usually does it to me.))

I must now tell myself,"YOU ARE 71,lose the weight or DIE!"its very bad,i have a "heart murmer"and my sister almost died from a stroke yrs ago.FAMILY PROBLEMS OF HEALTH you gotta help it.or you die too.

I know"the old weight watchers diet"backwards and forwards,i'm going to Costco to buy PHLATS OF TUNA FISH.(cheapest fish, and I always liked it.)--and eat it all the time.it used to be called"the fish diet,"(SUSHI not same thing, wonder if Chinese restaurants ever ok?vegies and little meat.THE SOUP will cure yer cold.--maybe go to non-junky Chinese once in a while.)

I am a nurse, and I hate when I get calls, with someone asking me a question, "before" they decide to call the Dr, or go to the ER. If it is a baby or child, just GO, do not call me first, if it is yourself, only you know exactly how you feel, better to have it checked out....

@Rescue Dog Mama I suppose that's better than the people who post pics of their child's rash or list symptoms on Facebook, at least they are asking someone with relevant experience. But I get that must be very frustrating at times. I work with kids with behavioural issues and I've had friends asking me for advice with their kids. And if anything when you work in a stressful environment - and I'm sure yours is way more then mine - you don't actually want to be thinking about it on time off.

@⭐️janerosity⭐️ Not only that, alot of them are kid questions (or babies) you do not question it, you cal the Dr., or go to the ER. I can't tell you how many sick babies (very sick) I have seen, because dumb parents wait to see, if it will go away, one of my Biggest Pet peeves. GRRRRRRRRRR

I use to draw alot when I was younger. I always had someone wanting me to do some work for them, whether it was for tattoos or what not. Always the same story (I'll pay ya.). When I finished the drawing, I showed it to them & expected to be paid as agreed. They would state how they loved it, then instead of paying me, they wanted me to change something about the picture or wanted to pay me less then what we agreed on. That got me angry to the point, I just quit doing anything for anyone any more. Except family, you know, you can't tell them flat out no. Especially grandma. smiley

@WEBHEAD🕸️ I am now curious to know what tattoo design Grandma had? I saw a post a while ago (I think it was on Twitter), about an artists response to people asking him to drop the price, he then drew their pictures in a style of a 4 yr old.

@⭐️janerosity⭐️ Grandma wanted me to draw those hummingbirds that kept landing on her so I drew a picture of her with the birds on her. She had a total of five that landed on her. That was the last time I seen her alive. Come to find out she took that picture I drew to the grave. I did that 4 year old slick move only once. Lost some folks confidence in what I could do. Bad move. LOL smiley
