I feel there are two main ways to review a film and these are based upon the fact that films vary wildly between, shall we say 'pure art' and 'simple entertainment'.
A film can be compared to all other films and be given (I would argue) an unfairly low score because it's creator/s didn't intend for it to be taken as a piece of high art.
Or a film could be compared against more similar films.
I can certainly see the merits of either, so in the interests of being fair I 'try' to strike a compromise, but tend towards the latter!
So, for instance, I might award both Forrest Gump and Idiocracy 10/10. Though I would concede that as a whole piece of art, the former for me is no doubt more praise worthy, but I wouldn't want to mark the latter down because I believe it really couldn't be any better for what it's trying to do!
