without established rules the english language would be very confused.
and olden english times the letter 'f' was a 's'. there used to be only 23 letters, but now there are 26.

standardizing spelling and pronunciation meant that english had standards. you can go on and reference the style of shakespeare and other published writers recorded the language of that era. how there was a differentiation between the classes and the upper class and lower(working classes) sounded completely different. how the language has come evolved and included works and expressions of other languages. you heard of a cul-de-sac. it is what we call a dead end ... well it is french and means bottom of the bag. or the abbreviation RSVP - means (in french) response sil vous plait - or in english please respond. a 'reverse' example of this would be TIdal Wave these days everyone always calls it a tsunami. and that is how a japanese work has entered the english language.... it is more than just slang...

the french go to great lenghts to conserve their language ... and there is a whole deparment to keep the french in french!!! english grows it allows other words into the language and that is why it is so descriptive, a good acedemic language, and as there is so much tied into english culture - books, plays, poems, songs and now movies... but before poetry, opera, theatre would be in french italian german and the english would study them

concord is a b**ch and if i remember correct is is when 'is' and 'are' are used.
'is' is singular ---- is that your book (if you had 'are' there is wouldn't "sound" right
'are' is plural --- are you coming home from school today OR why aren't you coming home from school today. if you used 'is' here it wouldnt 'sound correct'.... and that is concord in a nutshell!

active and passive - this is wicked and mean!!!
active is direct..... i am going home now
passive is indrect... she said she is going home now

basically everything you have ever studied - in ancient english times everyone had their own spellings for the same word - old english is very interesting (but not relevant)

GRAMMAR: parts of speech, concord, tenses, active and passive and so it (it has been awhile since i had to study this)

eg:
Common nouns - eg dog, cat
Proper nouns things that have capital letters
Collective nouns eg flock of sheep, a gander of geese, a parliment of idiots (that last one isnt an "offical" collective noun)
Abstract nouns like love, hate (things that you cant see feel touch taste - but exist ... that is why they are abstract)

verb - doing words (as like in latin and greek (and more modern languages' nouns have tenses too)
eg present: i am THROWING the ball, THROW the ball to me
past: he THREW the ball at me and i MISSED.
future: he said he will THROW the ball back over the fence.
(every sentence must have a verb - if it doesnt it isnt a proper sentence)
