Theatres using low light to combat Piracy? (829 views, 9 replies)

So went to a couple of movies recently, Captain Marvel and Dumbo and noticed something. Both films were hard to see due to low light conditions on screen. Both films were so dark one could not see details or make out some scenes or faces even. Even during daytimes scenes it was like a filter was on. Like a low contrast setting on a TV or computer. Now it could be that my theatre sucks and needs upgrades. Or the theatres deliberately do this to combat piracy. Any one have any ideas or am I just seeing things?

I haven't been to the theatre in years. I wouldn't doubt the lighting situation is intentional. I know some movies are really hard for me to keep up with because of the extremely dark scenes. I use the VLC media player, it lets me adjust. Helps a wee bit. Some movies if I watch in the daytime I have to shut all the curtains or I cannot make out details.

Maybe that's true, I also haven't been to the theatre in years. Here in Toronto the reason they do that is probably to conceal the bed bugs and not only piracy. Wouldn't go even if it was free....

That might be the case although I haven't been to the theater in a very long time.

I haven't been in a while either but my daughter goes with her friends a few times a month. I asked her if she's noticed anything off and she said it seemed to be the same to her. It could just be that the Grand theaters here haven't participated in doing that.

@◦•●◉✿♡Momof3αηgєℓѕ♡✿◉●•◦ It could also just be in certain places or certain theater chains.

Thanks for the responses. Like I said it could be the theatre it self since it needs upgrades but these movies were seen in two different rooms so I can’t see both having projector problems. It’s a multiplex so to have the same problem? It would make sense I guess to combat piracy. It just sucks because it kinda ruins the enjoyment of the movie, and ends up being a waste of money. Ironically leading to using sites like this to watch movies instead of going and spending the money.
