Plex and Raspberry pi (510 views, 3 replies)
Plex is okay, i just found it a little more complex and laggy on the streaming end. PS3 Media server is my go to, it works on all devices, not just Playstation. My 2 Cents
Really? I would like to know your setup to be honest. I have never had an issue with lag. to each his own. the media server from playstation seems very basic in my opinion and I like that plex pulls IMDB and episode information. I know I shouldn't but I do use an SSD for media and that does help that cache load faster.
I do wish plex had other option like a password protected directory or something so I could put cartoons that my kids could access and more adult themed (violence and language ... not porn :P ) on the same server. Mostly my kids stick to the cartoons but I have caught my daughter watching 13 hours of Benghazi. Not the worst movie but still. I do have the option to use the routers media server but I don't trust modems/routers to much. That's another topic.
Thanks for your input. I will look into that lag issue and how the ps3 media servers differ from the PS4.
I use Plex as well. I've never had any lag issues with it. Back before Chromecast came out, I used to stream everything to my PS3. It got really annoying though because it wouldn't let you stream protected content. Apparently they analyzed all the audio from whatever you were watching and matched it in a database and if it was from a pirated movie, Sony would shut it down. The browser that was in the PS3 would also block a lot of websites, and not just the porn ones but streaming sites like two-movies.
I finally gave up on Sony after I got that handheld Vita. Before it came out, it was advertised that you could play anywhere online against your friends over a 3g network. In reality, in America you could only use it on the At&t network. That would have been fine, except that after signing up with and paying At&t you found out that At&t was throttling the connection of Vita's so bad that you couldn't go online at all. I'm pretty sure that's why they had that language in the open Internet rules back when we had them so they couldn't throttle data on certain devices.

I don't know if this will help anyone but plex and rapsberry pi is great. I also run pi-hole for sinkholing ads network wide and home assistant for home automation. anyway, Plex has apps for everything. the free version lets you watch movies on your network. Plex pass will let you watch you movies anywhere with an Internet connection. You set up your free account, load it to your pi and stream movies to your device. PS4 has a plex app which is great. I also have a Vizio tv that has the app preloaded and Roku see it as well. Hope this helps some people. My family loves it. you can go as far as to include tv shows, podcasts and news.
