I was looking over the 'Just Added' section on Netflix to find a new movie to watch when I saw a movie that I know only by name. 'Indian Horse'. I know this movie without ever watching one second of it. Much like how I have never seen 'Grave of the Fireflies' or 'Requiem for a Dream', they are hard movies to watch. Beautiful, but I can never get myself put into the right mindset to watch them.
I know of this movie based on my wife's account of it. This movie takes place in a Canadian Residential School and deals with lots of traumatic and cruel treatment to children. My wife worked as a fundraiser for a local First Nations organization that is restoring one of the last standing residential schools in Canada. All as an effort to keep the stories and history of what happened at these awful places alive, and not forgotten.
Now, why am I taking about all of this? Because Netflix, in its glorious wisdom decided to market it more like a empowering sports movie. The synopsis that they have (for me at least) is: 'Stripped of his heritage at a residential school, an indigenous student finds refuge in the rink when he discovers a passion for hockey.' and the preview is of the young main character wowing the young priest with his skills, and having the young priest try to have the boy be a part of the hockey team, to which the old priest reflects the idea.
