This is one of those show that people will stick with or not. The pace of the show can be put in geological terms. The camera work, especially the focus pulling in the show is awful. As is the use of lighting. I can see why it was done this way, to add a greater depth that the oppresive nature to the shows subject matter, which could have been done way better, althoough does work very well and creates a very powerful effect relative to the subject matter of the show. Powerful themes around. Rape, Far right fundamental religious belife, even eugenics to some degree. The acting is at the highest level, with particular focus from my point of view to the characters Serena and Janine/Ofwarren, who are the stars of the show. This, although very slow moving is a very worth while show to stick with. It's dark, and emotionally demanding to watch. 9/10, which would have been a 10/10 had the niggles that spoiled the look of the show for me had been done better.

This is a special show, it makes you think. It's so easy to turn a society upside down, just takes those with power to decide how it's gonna be. That's scary. Elizabeth Moss is some actress, she can say more with her eyes than many can say with long dialogue. June is a true hero. Great show, can't wait until season 4.

Season 1 and 2 are the best so far to me. I have to see how this story ends. Elisabeth Moss is exceptional in her role. I'm praying season 4 will be a bounce back season for the show.

I read the book when I was younger just for the experience of reading a fellow Canadian's book. This series scares the sh*t out of me. I'm sorry to say it reminds me of what is going on below the border. Not that American's would actually go that far but when I first seen the episode of the women losing their jobs and how fast everything went to hell for all women it seemed possible. I think any woman watching deep down feels some sort of fear of the "what if?". So ladies if you want a show that's not a horror movie but a scary movie, this will do it for you. No matter what, it's great writing and acting. Takes you some place you didn't want to go.

@kellyann Most of Americans have no clue as to just how little we as a "Democracy" actually have a say in what our Federal Government says and does. But when all is said and done we are way better off than most countries.

@Flickfan The American's are separate from Gilad. They had a civil war and any Gilad's are held for war crimes, as the story goes.
Not ever suggesting that America could ever do such a thing! Hope you didn't interpret it that way. But right now the major one in charge has no respect for women if he can grab their crotches and think it's okay. Slippery slop to those misogynistic men who think this was the okay to do such things. No putting Trump down, just thinking it shows how he feels about women as compared to the Handmaid.

@kellyann I think your analysis is spot on. Serena started out screaming for fascist government. Well she got it, didn't think it would apply to her I guess.Again spot on about the fear. This crap scares the living hell out of me. It could very well come to pass someday.

As for Season 3, it has turned a corner in new writing. I would also like to add that anyone thinking that this show advocates a dystopian future where women are sexual slaves has NOT watched the show at all... Season 3 is going into uncharted and unwritten territory on the behalf of the novel that partially inspired this series. It's very gritty and incredibly unpredictable on every level (heart, soul, legal, illegal, new world, old world, male, female, world religion, etc., etc.). Most weeks I literally feel like I need at least a week to digest what I've seen and what it could possibly mean. I guess, because this has not happened, only those who have lived it would know. In other words, the viewer is in the hands of the actors. The acting is splendid in its unpredictability. Amazing and mesmerizing. I look forward, with my breath caught in my throat, every week.

I had to read the book a long time ago in a college lit class. I didn’t like it. We had to read both “Margarets”; Laurence and Atwood. Sigh. Not my type of reading for fun. I prefer to read biographies or funny books, and I read to make me happy and also for enjoyment or even to learn about a place I’d like to visit or how to cook something, so reading this was very painful for me.. Then I watched the movie with icky Robert Duvall because I’d already read the book, so I thought I’d check it out. Ugh. But I thought I’d try this series because I have CraveTV right now so I could watch all of the Ray Donovan episodes. I just have one thing to say: Walk Faster! I have never been so irritated by everyone walking SO slowly ALL the time no matter how urgent something seems to be or how non-threatening the situation is. And I am not even talking about the slo-mo bits. People who let their phone ring a dozen times before grabbing it or don’t get the door until the fourth or fifth doorbell or who whisper all the time for no reason (Lake Bell on Boston Legal...omg) or who walk like they’re always cautiously sneaking up on something like they do in this series bug me just a little more than, well, a little. ...

The series actually becomes very empowering for women, whereas the book and the first movie never gets there.

I love this Series! Even though it terrifies me to think that we could actually go that way. They don't show much about the way the rest of the ordinary people live. That these women are expected to have baby after baby just to have them taken away and given to upper society b**ches is appalling. I'm waiting and hoping for the revolution!

I loathed the book. Loathed it. It made me ache on a visceral level. That Atwood could even conceive of this travesty shocked and dismayed me and felt like a betrayal of her gender and of a humanity that was and is at least struggling to understand and achieve equality of the sexes.

It stuns me that men and women today ---especially women-- could endorse the viewing of this POS. Have we not progressed further than to actually give weight and energy to such an extreme objectification, oppression and dehumanization of women? Why in God's NAME would anyone think this a "good" show? Supporting such idiocy is one giant step backwards. Pardon my lack of PC-ism and praise of the execution of this horrifying concept. smh

@ThomasinaPaine When she wrote the book, she made sure she only used situations that actually existed at or before the time she wrote it. This is a conjuring out of her imagination - it was a conglomeration reflection of what actually was.

@ThomasinaPaine We aren't supporting this society or what led to it. In fact, the series is portrayed in a completely opposite way from what you seem to be offended about. This series IS based on the preciousness of freedom and does not in any way support the society that the handmaids are in. Respectfully, I wonder if you've watched it? ...I won't comment on the book because that's a whole other subject. :)

@ThomasinaPaine The whole point is that the viewer sees the parallel in this very moment and the fragility of freedom.

@ThomasinaPaine I think you're probably missing the underlying messages in this series. It's precisely supposed to highlight gender issues, especially feminism and how it's undermined. It might be surreal, shocking even, but it only supports the overall intent with this show. The parallels to what happens today around all of us, is subtly hidden away on a visceral level. But it is there.

OK! Everyone loves this show. So I'm going to make some enemies here, because i'm going to flip the script. Change the narrative. I think it's a good science FICTION series. But if the birth rate ever dropped that low, I don't think we would be treating women like this. Or even like we do. I think we would be tteating them like Royalty. Because they would be the most important people on the earth, and they would know it. We would ALL know it. Women would have ALL the power. No, my argument is with Margaret Sanger, whose book this is fashioned after. Sanger was a proponent of "negative" eugenics. This is a quote by her ""Our failure to segregate morons who are increasing and multiplying ... demonstrates our foolhardy and extravagant sentimentalism" "In this matter, the example of the inferior classes, the fertility of the feebleminded, the mentally defective, the poverty-stricken classes, should not be held up for emulation.
"On the contrary, the most urgent problem today is how to limit and discourage the over-fertility of the mentally and physically defective." -- Margaret Sanger. "The Eugenic Value of Birth Control Propaganda."

@bondojoe Your points are all valid, but what you've largely neglected is this is based on the dystopian novel of the same name by Margaret Atwood. This series is fairly masterful. This Series is based on the 1985 Book of the same name by Margaret Atwood and the film from 1990 with Robert Duvall playing the creepy Commander. If you enjoy this series I would recommend viewing the Film. If you have seen the film and enjoy reading, read the book. All of the above are fairly true to the book, although the Series is plunging further ahead, it still remains true to the society that Margaret Atwood wrote about. People with questions about the Series will get a lot of background information from both the film and the book. The film also has quite a well known ensemble (Natasha Richardson, Faye Dunaway, Aidan Quinn, Elizabeth McGovern, etc.) so although the film is a wee bit older, it is very well acted and still cohesive. The subject matter is something that is horrifying, and in my mind, possible. I suppose that's what makes it so brilliant and utterly stunning in a visceral sense. Thank you Two-Movies for having the links here.

@Flickfan The Handmaid's Tale is a dystopian novel[2] by Canadian author Margaret Atwood,[3][4] originally published in 1985. It is set in a near-future New England, in a totalitarian, Christian theonomy that has overthrown the United States government.[5] The novel focuses on the journey of the handmaid Offred. Her name derives from the possessive form "of Fred"; handmaids are forbidden to use their birth names and must echo the male, or master, whom they serve.

Brilliant. I think there was always a risk with a follow up to a series that was based upon one book that something would get lost in terms of content. It's only the first episode (I am saving the second to watch later) but it's quite clear that they are going to be doing it justice and then some.
This show stirs up so much emotion in the viewer - but never as much as Elizabeth Moss can convey with a look, her eyes alone deserve an Oscar.
There are societies and cultures in which women are oppressed today, and FGM happens. The world in this show is grim and depressing, and seems more so because it is set in ours, but it's not that far from reality for some in other parts of the world.
That makes me angry, this show makes me angry. I am very glad I live in a society where that's ok.

I hope we get to see a bit of Aunties back story this time too, as it seems she is not happy with the role this new world has forced her to play.
