[Suggestion] TV-Show status (Ended/Running/Canceled) (780 views, 22 replies)

As the thread title already gives away the idea, it would be really good to have this data included for our TV-Shows.

If the show is still running, show status: [Running]
If the show is still ended, show status: [Ended]
If the show is still canceled, show status: [Canceled]

It would be best displayed under the cover picture.
I took the time to make a version for this.

Here is a preview:

Here is the HTML Code for the "Status": pastebin.com/cYVYM8Le

So, after adding this, the next question is:
But how we will update all the current show statuses, there are too many already in our Database?

Well, I noticed that the web-site is using IMDB ID's for every TV-Show, which is very nice, because now we can use an API to automaticaly update every show with the right status.

If you want, I can actually help you to write the API Code to do this one ;)
Thank you, WingTsun™.

Ended and Canceled are basically the same, no?

Maybe ended means that the series came to its natural conclusion, whereas it may be cancelled after one season, in which case some members may not think it worthwhile starting to watch?

@..box.. Ah, ok. That makes sense :)

@..box.. Yes, exactly.
Cancelled - This is when show gets Terminated by a network, typically because of low viewership, financial losses, or unfavourable critical reviews.
Ended - When show runs it natural course, and simply the story is finished.

that seems unnecessary, since all you have to do is scroll down to see the latest or last episode and their date of broadcast. regarding the Ended qualification: "X-Files" was technically ended for nearly fifteen years, yet it came back into production again. same with "Dr Who". if you have a question about any series possibly ending or not, the imdb link should have the answer.

@uunboundd That's kind of the point really.

You can not tell the show status just from "last date of broadcast", because there are shows with years of time between seasons.

For those shows, who are canceled for ages, and it comes back, it will be useful to have the status updated to "Running" again. Otherwise there might be a unecesary confusion, like if its a bonus episode, or upload mistake.

@uunboundd Absolutely right, that's why it's rather useless. We already have release range being displayed like 2008-2013.

I am with uunboundd on that. We have seen instances in the past where a TV Show has been canceled, yet the writers did manage to conclude the story in a natural and believable way without many plot holes. Then we have other cases where the TV Show had been originally canceled only for the rights to be bought by another production company and resume filming. "The Expanse" was the perfect example for this. IMDB is the guide in any case, so why complicate matters?

You can see that Breaking Bad: Released 2008-2013. Not enough?

@Dr.Evil They seem to be a bit divided on it.

I can think of other things that would be more useful, but that's just me.
