October A-Z Word Game (975 views, 13 replies)
@FemaleLotRfan83 Speaking of that... it just kicked in this way ;) the chill of October is here.
Octoberfest - Held annually in Munich, Bavaria, Germany, it is a 16- to 18-day folk festival running from mid or late September to the first weekend in October, with more than six million people from around the world attending the event every year. Locally, it is often called the Wiesn, after the colloquial name for the fairgrounds.
The Oktoberfest is an important part of Bavarian culture, having been held since the year 1810. Other cities across the world also hold Oktoberfest celebrations that are modeled after the original Munich event.
@Livinginabox Please be respectful and refrain from constantly going off topic in all the threads I start. This is an alphabetical game as you know it is stated clearly at the top of this thread which you can see like you see this thread exists. Everyone is welcome to here and to all threads even if I am blocked by a member or I have a member blocked. Thanks!
October is one of my favourite months of the year as for the first half the weather is fantastic - 30ºC and people still going to the beach. Wonderful. Now the humidity is wafting in from the sea with the north wind so we are feeling the nip in the air.
An interesting tradition on the First Sunday is the Pearly King Harvest Festival
Dating from the 19th century, the Pearly Kings & Queens are a much-loved Cockney tradition. It started when a young boy covered a suit with pearly buttons to attract attention and to raise money for the poor at charity events and fairs. Other boroughs were so impressed that they got their own Pearly King or Queen.
The tradition continues to thrive today and Pearly Kings and Queens can be seen in their full spectacle at the annual Pearly Kings and Queens Harvest Festival.
The annual Harvest Festival Service at the church of St. Martin-in-the Fields offers a spectacular display of historical London in all its glory.
October is also the time for collecting grapes in the wine producing region of Rioja. Small tractors take over the roads to deliver their loads to the wineries and the process begins again. They are expecting a good harvest this year so get ready for a good crianza by this time next year.
I suppose the worst think about October is the festival that has been taken from the Celts and turned into Disneyfest for the goths and people who think the Festival is for making lists and lists of horror films and adults dressing up as Horror film/story characters along with their children and make it into some type of costume competition. It has been converted (like Christmas) into a marketing bonanza selling cheap and overpriced masks and selling the idea that these people are buying into some movie production where they are the stars. Sorry to disappoint but you have been duped. Watch a horror film - great. Buy some sweets but remember it is a pagan festival that was hijacked by savvy Irish Americans who knew how to make a buck and sell a fantasy.
@---BOX--- That's soooo true!
However, they got that savvy from the Catholic church who sold out (our) their real spirituality "paganism" and replaced Celt festival grounds with churches, etc. All Celts are pagans by ancestry. Fact.
