This of course is not only a very respectable movie, but a very respectable homage to Carpenters 1982 movies of the same name. This of course is the prequel to the 1982 movie whitch ties very cleverly with the ending shots during the closing credits to the opening shots of the 1982 movie. Although using the same format in scene structure and also reformatting many of the sense from the original movie it still stands as a great movie within it;s own rights. The FX are upgrades as one would expect as well as the quaity of the acting by a great cast of relative unkown actors outside of the scandinavian camp, who many have gone on to bigger and better things. This is a great Sci Fi Horror and was I glad that it had been made. If only somebody would take on a remake of John Carpenters other cult classic They Live. Solid 8/10 from me on this one.
I am so excited to watched the Thing movie in 2011, and it came out in the fall of 2011, and it was 8 years ago. Then in the first movie that there was a prequel called the Thing, and it was officially coming!
So one of my favorite part of the movie:
• The teeth part
• Juliette turns to an ailen by itself
• Escape scene
• Deleted scenes
• The finale boss part
This was unfairly criticized, but is a well made prequel that makes it even more clear what happened to cause the events of The Thing.
Threre are major goofs in the innept way the creature acts that has been detailed ad nauseum on youtube.
Mary Elizabeth Winstead is a serious actress but at the time of the filming was written off as a scream queen. In the link below, she is wildly out of control alcoholic sabotaging her life.
Because The Thing is so iconic and Carpenter is not involved, some fans were very angry. Then this is not using animatronics and complex stop-motion but CGI and it doesn't mesh well.
You probably should watch these as a double feature.
As a companion piece you might like The Last Winter which is about oil workers damaging the permafrost, and the Earth (or Mother Nature) then unleashes revenge upon them, and it's implies is the end of the world by insanity. It is very creepy. This is a better realization of what The Happening was aiming for.

A very good prequel and an excellent movie.I originally thought it was a remake to the John Carpenter classic but was quite surprised to see that this preceded the original and the ending picks up with the John Carpenter classic.Excellent acting, direction, terror and cinematography.
I recommend this film for those who enjoyed the original, and those who enjoy a good sci-fiction.
An excellent prequel for the original. What about a pre-prequel? It would be interesting to know how the species got to earth.
@wieichbin now that would be dope as fck
great movie no other comments just great thanks
the folks who say they can't understand negative comments are mostly people who have not seen the original. I saw the Carpenter version the week it came out curiously the same week that Blade Runner was released [both these films under-performed financially]. John Carpenter's remake is a masterpiece in every sense. the music is fab, the creature effects where mind--blowing at the time ( This would have been practical effects last hurrah before being consumed by an ocean of digital fx), the ensemble do an amaing job of giving us real, fleshed out characters with the minimum of dialog. Yeah, it's bleak but it is electric bleak : )
if you haven't seen the original make sure you watch that first - if only because technologically the prequel is pretty much all CGI. you may find, like me, that the prequel is redundant.
Very good movie. The story explains how the thing evolved and then shows how it ends up to the first Thing movie. I would recommend watching this movie first then watch the original 1982 Thing movie. Get a lot of popcorn ready.
Here it is 2011, 29 years since John Carpenter's "The Thing". Believe it or not, I watched this film before watching the 1982 one. I just couldn't remember seeing this one. But after watching it, I learned I didn't. What a treat this was. Before I go on, I best tell you all I download these movies before I fully watch them, that way no interruptions. Plus, the next movie in the collection automatically plays. Well, after watching the credits, then "Lars" riding in the Helicopter shooting at the dog, the next film begin. John Carpenter's 1982 "The Thing"! We got to see the Spaceship crash to earth. Then "BAM!" There's "Lars" riding around in the same Helicopter trying to shoot the same dog. This totally blew my mind. The effects are great, The story and placement of everything seemed right in place for a prequel done 29 years later. I loved it. I do however advice to watch this one before the 1982 version. ... I all makes sense then. Read moreLess
wow I did love this movie though the story is not that catch up like the -1981 The Thing(Sequel) but the Visual Effects of this film and the creator of the dummy is what I praised the classic is very fantastic for it's practical effects thanks to John Carpenter for his best directing. At first I didn't know that it Was the Prequel to John Carpenter 1981,then I was surprised after I knew it.
Great monster/alien flick. Good jump scares and great gory fun. I don't recall if I've seen the 1982 version so I'm off to watch that one now. I recommend this for any scifi/horror fan. Enjoy 8/10
Great actors, great story. I had never watched the whole movie until now. I really liked it.
Wow. I had forgotten all about this. This is actually prequel to the 1982 version.
Could not watch a movie i don't understand a word, than, looks just like copy of original 'the thing' directed by legendary John Carpenter 1982 with Kurt Russell, this movie is a cult, so many movies after 'STEAL' at least one scene or idea from Arctic alien , i 'll watch again original instead.......3/10
@danielle666 It's not a remake. It's a prequel to John Carpenter's film. :)
Definitely one of the best monster movies in history, I don't understand how this could get a negative vote!
