SLOW... but well worth a watch.. Shows a lesson learned and understanding. All Ages..
After reading the reviews and desperately looking for a decent movie to watch I gave this a go. I wasn't disappointed. What a great wee movie this is. Great acting from Timberlake and the Little boy who plays Sam. If lockdowns gave you time to put your feet up and chillax then stick this beauty on & enjoy.
The most heartbreaking movie in a very long time. I shed a few tears and i hardly ever do on a movie. STRONG recommendation!! Slow pace, intense, sensitivly told and full of empathy. This is an unlikely but beautiful relation the ex convict and this fabulous lil boy develop. It is also a brilliant study of small town USA, the narrowness, the hopelessness, the hostility to everything different.
Ryder Allen (the boy Sam)does an unbelieveable job ..all the time [SPOILER]he shows up in a new favourite costume -and the really are funny sometimes, especially the fairy princesshhe manages to sell it as the uttermost pretty thing you ever saw.
Justin Timberlake also does a really good job.
A deeply personal and so humane story.
My bet is that Ryder Allen will be nominated for Oscar (he wont get it though) like the boy from JoJo Rabbit 2019
10/10 and i hardly ever give that.
Palmer is an emotional, mature drama about a formerly incarcerated man named Eddie Palmer who becomes friends with a gender-nonconforming child. The movie is compassionate and made with empathy, care, and positive representation. *Great performances and a powerfully inclusive story. Enjoyed this film.
I liked it, but I don't know what I can really add at this point other than that. I thought everyone gave a pretty strong performance. It is kind of predictable, but it's a movie made by Apple so although it probably won't win any awards, it did entertain me. Which is what it's supposed to do.
Justin Timberlake is a decent actor, no doubt, but he's not at the top of the talent list of best actors. He gives a very strong performance here, especially in scenes where he is protecting the people he loves, but he lacks the subtlety and believability of being an ex-convict of 12 years. I blame a few of these holes on directing and script - not his fault. As far as script goes, this movie lacks counter-ideas to the ideas presented showing us a relatively one sided opinion. There isn't enough threat to the character of Palmer. Reversals are light-handed throughout and I don't believe his character is irreversibly changed by the end of the story. Don't get me wrong though, this movie will pull at your heart strings when it wants to. The young boy (Sam) played by Ryder Allen steals the show. Without him, this movie would fail. With better directing, this movie could have been a bit better, but the script felt more like a movie of the week. Still worth watching.
great movie a solid 10 out of 10, after watching one awful comedy, another which I just had to stop, and then a so-so romantic drama, I thought "Can't go to bed yet, let's give this film with JT a chance" and soooooo glad I did, this was a beautiful American drama film written with a lot of heart and as so many others have said JT whatever you think of him the person, or the music, he did brilliant in this movie and so did the entire cast from the beautiful Alisha Wainwright who played Maggie the good hearted concerned teacher to the kid who played Sam "Ryder Allen" I'd be cheesed off if this film was overlooked. Very beautiful drama which addresses many issues like the ridiculous Neo-D!ckensian crime bill of the 90s that forever penalizes anyone has been to prison to Queerphobia and issues of masculinity and femininity, to love and acceptance of who you are and bonding with people regardless of whether they are blood or not, honestly this is a beautiful picture it may seem I just described an explicitly political film but honestly it isn't, just a great drama and you won't be disappointed. ... its a film about redemption, love, second chances, and more, do enjoy! and well done the entire cast especially JT and Ryder Allen. and hope to see Alisha Wainwright in more good movies such as this in the future. This movie is a bullet proof watch. Gentle soty telling with acting that makes you want to engage with the charachters, in situations from the real world. The building dynamic between Palmer and Sam is natural with a great performance by both Timberlake and young Ryder Allen. The performance of Sam's mother by English actress Juno Temple in a supporting role is also of note. This is one of those movies that drawes you in, without having to place big set peices into the stoyline. Great movie to watch with your partber on a cold winters day. Glad I took a punt on this one. 8/10
Is being politically incorrect still okay? Cause I'm like Palmer in the beginning. If you're a boy in my house...YOU'RE A BOY IN MY HOUSE. I'm not treating you like your strung out mother encouraging feminine behavior. Palmer breaks his own internal code accepting things "as is".
Bad film for many reasons. Unbelievably bad. For a start, criminals shouldn't be allowed near children. Another thing, do kids really have so-called gender issues? I don't think so. And yet that's what we're expected to swallow. There are so many other problems: the kid is painfully annoying, and an ex-con who has a heart is like the biggest cliché ever. Worse still: this movie's last half-hour has got to be the slowest most boring 30 mins in the history of Hollywood. Genuinely terrible.
@Crutchbender wow, YOU truely understood what the movie is about.. i hope your children will explain it to you.
@Crutchbender Haha I'm so glad the movie made you so mad that You feel the need to post such disappointment like this.
And Yes. Kids go through gender issues like this from early age.
Just like straight kids that started sexual awakenings or whatever at early age. But You would just consider that normal even when those kids go super wild at that phase.
At least This boy just plays dress up and be as tidy as a princess.
I'm glad that this movie shaked you in some way about this topic.
@kent.girl And I'm so glad my review made you wet the bed. As for this movie making me mad, in your dreams cupcake! So calm down and save your preaching for someone who cares.
@Crutchbender Theres no preaching in my words what.so.ever.
Literally just said, these kids existed irl.
Nah man. You cared so much You just HAD TO post a criticism for a family drama content.
Cause It bothered you so much
Okay - Justin Timberlake - I thought this would be a waste as I remember his previous movie: an unforgettable something about time. Was I wrong. Both him and Ryder Allen did an excellent job carrying a movie with a ton of punch to it. Most movies like this are written to be little more than tear-jerkers, with loose plots and average acting. I was pleasantly surprised and enjoyed it from start to finish. I did feel the ending was a bit predictable, but it did fit in with the rest of the movie. Well written; well acted; well done.
Realy heartwarming pulling your heartstrings type of story.
I did not know Justin Timberlake was such a stellar actor. I kinda heard his prestigious nomination in acting in the past but never realy seen it.
He is so annoying but You cant help to admit that The guy is realy talented.
I wish theres not much raunchy sex scene so that It could totally be enjoyed as a family watch.
Because Kids (and parents) should watch the story surrounding the little boy character.
@kent.girl Totally agree with everything you just said.
I used to think JT was a bit of a tool (idiot) but he really is a talented person.
I think the sex scenes could have been left out without harming the movie too. Although, it is usually the first thing a ex-con wants when they get out.
Good movie. drama, not a thriller, but strong character stuff
It's a good movie. It isn't action pack or anything like that. The story arc is great and everyone, I mean every single person in this movie knows how to act.
I thought it was very realistic. At times I laughed and at times I felt my eyes tearing over.
It brought back some memories from my own youth [SPOILER]Domestic violence and substance abuse ran rampant in my household.
I would and probably will watch this again.
An ex-con meets a boy that changes his life as he adjusts back into society.
1. There's this stigma that once a criminal, always a criminal. That's why there's this repeated cycle of going in and out of the system. Treat people how you'd want to be treated.
2. People who neglect their children deserve the worst punishment (tax free). Being normal is overrated, self acceptance over conforming to social norms!
@DrewskiBrewski Astonishing how unforgiving a supposed christian nation can be wo looking in the hate mirror.
I notice Oregon just recently 2-1-21 decriminalized hard drug usage [not major distribution] i bet they have far better recovery and better harm reduction and far less crime, just like Portugal.
OMG This was such a good movie!!!! I wasn't expecting this movie to be this good, I saw Justin Timberlake and I was like I'm not watching. We were bored at work with the office being closed to the public so we put this movie on. All 3 of us crying towards the end of the movie. Justin Timberlake was really good in this as Palmer but the real star was Ryder Allen as Sam. I love how the bond developed between them and how Palmer who was being judged for being a felon eventually saw what was happening to Sam and accepted him. A lot of people can learn from this movie. Accept people for who they are and what's in the inside.
