Let's hear it for Communism!
Bigoted Bob says - Hot Digity Dog Digity You'll Never Get Burned By Bernie.
Quoting professor Valery Legasov at the end of the series:
"To be a scientist is to be naive. We are so focused on our search for the truth,
we fail to consider how few actually want us to find it.
But it is always there, whether we see it or not, whether we choose to or not.
The truth doesn't care about our needs or wants.
It doesn't care about our governments, our ideologies, our religions.
It will lie in wait for all time. And this, at last, is the gift of Chernobyl.
Where I once would fear the cost of truth, now I only ask:
What is the cost of lies?"
I found it ironic that almost immediately after quoting the professor that the producers state that the character of the strong willed woman "Ulana Khomyuk" - played by Emily Watson - who told professor Valery Legasov what he was going to do and say was created to represent the dozens of scientists and to honor their dedication and service to truth and humanity.

The ineptitude and bureaucratic swamp that was the Communist Soviet Union is well displayed in this series. Now look at the Chinese Communist Party's reaction to the coronavirus outbreak and their attempts to suppress information. Isn't Communism great, kids?
I am glad they show the heroism and humanity of individuals who saved millions, however. Their sacrifice should never be forgotten.
@Luvlinguae Let us not forget the USA's incompetence en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Three_Mile...
@thekingandI I remember the incident. Except no one died and it was well contained, all things considered. I know the kids today love to fantasise and wax nostalgic about the Soviet Union and Communism, but I don't. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Three_Mile...
I loved this show.
Riveting and shocking at the same time.
Not a great advert for nuclear energy nor communism.
And the fear permeating throughout the old USSR.
Heart wrenching, informative, sensitive and compelling. The cast is superb, the acting impeccable and the fact that this is based upon a historical event makes it all the more poignant. To know that this is an account of what happened and what could have happened is terrifying. This is one of the most staggering events in human history, and one I knew so very little about.
Stunning. How close the world came to a nuclear holocaust and we didn't know it. Makes me shudder.
I must say I learned a lot from this show. Whenever I watch a show about true events I always look them up and read about them before, during and after watching. I never knew how truly horrifying this event was. I never knew how much the Soviets covered this up. 31 official deaths, HA!! How laughable, but terrible is that? Did you know that a 1988 decree prevented Soviet doctors from citing radiation as a cause of death or illness? They just continually covered up and lied, lied, lied. We will never know the true number of deaths, illnesses, deformities, etc. I hope we could expect better from governments today, I guess that would depend which government, but I'm not so sure sometimes.
Anyhow I really learned a lot and think this show is something everyone should watch. Brilliant acting and as far as I can tell they really kept very close to the truth. I can't recommend this enough.
@rickgrimesrocks Well, I don't have to write a review now. This is basically everything I was gonna say.
..Except.. for the part about hoping for better from governments today. I don't trust any of them from anywhere around the world.
I can't help but feel like any government, anyone in politics, will tell you anything you want to hear, as long as it doesn't threaten their grasp of power.
Absolutely and positively RIVETING. I was on the edge the whole time. One of those rarities that turns your lumbar spine to Jell-O. 5***** Stars. This will sweep the Emmys.
@Tamperer71 If your lumbar turns to jell-o, you may have gotten too close to the exposed reactor core.
I want to say just WOW and yet I want to say so much more. The courage it must have taken to put this series together is outstanding. The final episode is so incredibly difficult to watch. So well written and told, so tense and horrifying. I watched until the very end to honor those who made this so we could all experience it. Take the time to watch this, it is important.

@Bread&Circuses Behold capitalism in action! Do not forget THREE MILE ISLAND! en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Three_Mile...
@thekingandI Learn history so you're aware of what you speak. How many died in Three Mile Island? How many days, weeks or months did it take for President Carter to personally inspect?
Now learn of Chernobyl.
@Bread&Circuses Communism, actually, per which 100, 000, 000 of my peeps were murdered and enslaved. Kinda stinks of now.
@Tamperer71 Communism is socialism at the point of a gun. As socialism is adverse to human nature, it always becomes communism. Never let anyone or anything inhibit your ability to protect yourself and others. Sorry about your peeps. We did what we could.
@Bread&Circuses Cheers mate. Up to 60% of my lineage was wiped out. 100% agreed to safeguard against tyranny. Didn't Venezuela voluntarily cede their guns to the government prior to collapse?-- Right where we are being steered. And I don't have to remind you who owns the monopoly on Genocide and created a stolen nation from it at an inflated figure of a mere 6, 000, 000?
We must all be the Crucifixion, Resurrection and Ascension very soon or...I shudder at the prospect.
One of the best written, Amazingly acted shows ever put on tv. It's both amazing and horrifying at the same time. The fact that this stuff actually happened makes it a bit harder to watch.
It's so well put together. Just absolutely horrifying. I give it a 9.8 out of 10
@Mister_Doctor For your consideration: dosmovies.com/watch_movie/Secrets_in_the....
What a wonderful, riveting show. 9 / 10. So very well written, film and acted. I remember a few years back watching and engineering type show on the design, construction and placement of the latest "seal" on the reactor core.
Back when this happened I was executive chef of Hawaiian resorts. One evening a big wig asks " to see the chef " about my wonderful pork ribs he had for dinner. After a little hand shaking and back slapping he told me just secured two train cars of pork ribs from somewhere eastern Europeanish, I forget exactly where now. Without thinking my retort was, " Oh,those Chernobyl ones." He turned white as a ghost; his whole table went silent. Embarrassed by my social faux pas, I merely turned around and retreated to the kitchen.
@Bread&Circuses Now we have a wannabe facist dictator at the helm thanks to a racist cult that is petrified of white America losing it's majority. They will forgive even treason by POTUS as long as he tells them they matter more than people with brown skin.
@Bread&Circuses Crazy! Per your field, if may I ask--what exactly was A. Bourdain talking about when he said it was common for top chefs in a restaurant to stick 2 fingers up their underling's rectums, as he was the recipient of in his early career....? Sorry it's a bit off topic--but your title jarred my memory--may he RIP. Amazing! HBO does it again. I am without breath from Chernobyl. I'm thinking, Andy Cohen should do a Real Housewives of Chernobyl.
@Bread&Circuses HA! I wonder if he kept the ribs? Was that the end of your cooking career?
@bondojoe No, just another day in the life.
I bet the the meat would fall off his pork rib bones.
The coverup of CHernobyl like so many incidents of it's type are dangerous because it allows a false sense that this event is consigned to history, done and dusted.. The fact that the Russian government, to this day, calculate the death toll at 31 is deeply worrying.
The 'Sarcophagus' that covers the still lethal radioactive fuel from the core is estimated to last 100 years. The massive mound of nuclear sludge that it covers is 100 000 years. One of the nany amazing things about it was, in spite of a state that wanted this kept secret from the western world at least, the innumerable souls that worked on the clean-up, e.g. the miners, knew they were, for the most part, writing their death warrants, they did it anyway. they sacrificed for that very system that allowed for this kind of cover-up, that oppressed the Russian people. The fact that the miners task of burrowing underneath the reactor core was ultimately moot is particularly terrible.
This was masterfully made( the soundtrack alone is fantastic). Crafted with passion by all concerned it should be viewed by anyone who cares about the state of there world. Like climate threats it should not be ignored. people should be educated about such things. People like Donald Trump..

Maybe one of the best mini-series I've seen in ages. Little too much reality for today's 'safe space' generation! LoL
This is outstanding, compelling viewing and also as others have said, utterly terrifying. I remember being 12 and sh*t scared when this happened, even though we lived in London.
Those poor people.
9.5/10
This is very very good.
And absolutely terrifying.
I was 7 months pregnant when this happened, I remember hearing reports of traces of radioactivity in the UK, and I did not leave the house if it was raining. Some people thought I was being paranoid.. I didn't care. Nuclear energy has always worried me more than nuclear bombs. Someone somewhere has to make the decision to push the button for a bomb to go off, and the deterrent idea has worked - so far, but accidents occur through human error, ignorance and/or negligence and nature (eg Fukushima) is unpredictable.
I'd like to think that lessons were learnt, but whether they were or not, all the time we have nuclear plants we have the risk.
And even if we got rid of them all we still have waste that's dangerous forever.
Stuff of nightmares.
@⭐️janerosity⭐️ that is verry well said dear reading your comment makes me even more sure to want to watch this show, you have a way with words and i love to read it,lol have a great day dear.
jeez, this and GoT on the same day..
i'm a wreck. the three guys going back into the building,, that was terrifying...
Why is this a UK production? It's exceptionally well done but why not a Russian production?
@AnhedoniaNightmare ....you watched the show, right? You didn't notice the government cover up? You ever see any country tell true stories of their f**k ups?
@AnhedoniaNightmare Russia has been working on one since 2014 and will be released. "The series will follow a KGB counter-intelligence officer and the CIA agent he pursues, as the latter attempts to gain intelligence from the Chernobyl power plant"
It will include “The hypothesis [about] the interference of Americans in the work of the Chernobyl nuclear power plant, many historians do not exclude the fact that on the day of the explosion one of the agents of the enemy intelligence services was working at the station. It has not yet been established whether his activity was connected with the explosion.” accoring to director Aleksei Muradov
@AnhedoniaNightmare Was that a joke? I would imagine this is still a huge embarrassment for them, I doubt they would want thier people openly knowing exactly where they fooked up eh.
@redhitchy Not a joke.
Think how weird a Japanese production of Three Mile Island would be.
Or an American production of the Fukushima Dai-ichi disaster.
@AnhedoniaNightmare The Fukushima Dai-ichi meltdown and subsequent related disaster are well documented on YouTube with several U.S. and Australian groups tracking that completely perfect example of mans desire to out think nature and what we gained from that.
I've never been more terrified. I was going to sleep, I was going to look up how many Radio......
.holysh*t..
www.carbonbrief.org/mapped-the-w...
@TX2Guns Except, you wake up from Nightmares. This is truly terrifying, I agree, but because it's been made reality. In our lifetimes. On our shared planet and ecosystem. Twice.
@ᚘ𝕺ƸᚰĦҜïᑻ⭍🌑 I think what is more terrifying than the actual accident was witnessing first hand how the "Managers" refused to accept reality to avoid being blamed and then how Soviet High Command covered it up and lied to hundreds of thousands of people to their peril. Ahhh, The Joys of Communism...Do you Feel the Bern Yet?🤬👎

9.5/10 Like so many human-caused disasters, this all came down to greed and personal ambition. 31 official deaths. Did you notice there was no death count on the [SPOILER] ?? Did that searchlight-like beam going up in the air really happen? I never saw that image in anything published at the time. I watched the first part last night, I watched the last 4 this morning. It is 11:20 and I need a drink.
