Gotta love the classics - as relevant today as it was way back then
What's going on?
Mother, mother
There's too many of you crying
Brother, brother, brother
There's far too many of you dying
You know we've got to find a way
To bring some lovin' here today, eheh
Father, father
We don't need to escalate
You see, war is not the answer
For only love can conquer hate
You know we've got to find a way
To bring some lovin' here today, oh oh oh
Picket lines and picket signs
Don't punish me with brutality
Talk to me, so you can see
Oh, what's going on
What's going on
Yeah, what's going on
Ah, what's going on
In the mean time
Right on, baby
Right on brother
Right on babe
Mother, mother, everybody thinks we're wrong
Oh, but who are they to judge us
Simply 'cause our hair is long
Oh, you know we've got to find a way

Move on up
Hush now child, and don't you cry
Your folks might understand you, by and by
Move on up, toward your destination
You may find from time to time
Complication
Bight your lip, and take a trip
Though there may be wet road ahead
And you cannot slip
So move on up for peace will find
Into the steeple of beautiful people
Where there's only one kind
So hush now child, and don't you cry
Your folks might understand you, by and by
Move on up, and keep on wishing
Remember your dream is your only scheme
So keep on pushing
Take nothing less, than the second best
Do not obey, you must keep your say
You can past the test
Just move on up, to a greater day
With just a little faith
If you put your mind to it you can surely do it
Just move on up
Move on up
But move on up
Oh child, but just move on up
But move on up
Move on up
and of course ...
Living For The City
A boy is born in hard time Mississippi
Surrounded by four walls that ain't so pretty
His parents give him love and affection
To keep him strong moving in the right direction
Living just enough, just enough for the city...ee ha!
His father works some days for fourteen hours
And you can bet he barely makes a dollar
His mother goes to scrub the floor for many
And you'd best believe she hardly gets a penny
Living just enough, just enough for the city...yeah
His sister's black but she is sho 'nuff pretty
Her skirt is short but Lord her legs are sturdy
To walk to school she's got to get up early
Her clothes are old but never are they dirty
Living just enough, just enough for the city...um hum
Her brother's smart he's got more sense than many
His patience's long but soon he won't have any
To find a job is like a haystack needle

A great song. But it seemed that every poor persoin in America came either from Georgia, Tennessee, or Mississippi! Ooops! Forgot about Detroit!
@---BOX--- That intro is one of the best ever. The Temptations were not taken seriously enough.
I really did not think there were any Hip-Hop / R&B fans on this site but voila :) Thanks for contributing to this list and look forward to more posts. Cheers!
and this ... shut ur mouth
The theme from "Shaft"
Who's the black private d**k
That's a sex machine to all the chicks? (Shaft)
You're damn right
Who is the man that would risk his neck for his brother, man? (Shaft)
Can ya dig it?
Who's the cat that won't cop out when there's danger all about? (Shaft)
Right on
You see this cat Shaft is a bad mother (Shut your mouth)
But I'm talkin' about Shaft (Then we can dig it)
He's a complicated man but no one understands him but his woman (John Shaft)
And from the British band Blue Mink ...
Melting Pot
Take a pinch of white man
Wrap it up in black skin
Add a touch of blue blood
And a little bitty bit of Red Indian boy
Curly Latin kinkies
Mixed with yellow Chinkees
If you lump it all together
Well, you got a recipe for a get along scene
Oh, what a beautiful dream
If it could only come true, you know, you know
What we need is a great big melting pot
Big enough to take the world and all it's got
And keep it stirring for a hundred years or more
And turn out coffee colored people by the score
Rabbis and the Friars
Vishnus and the Gurus
You got the Beatles or the Sun God, it's true
Well, it really doesn't matter what religion you choose
No, no no
Making Lady Favor
Mrs. Graceful
You know that livin' could be tasteful
We should all get together in a lovin' machine
I better call up the Queen
It's only fair that she knows, you know, you know

Superstition
Very superstitious,
Writing's on the wall,
Very superstitious,
Ladders bout' to fall,
Thirteen month old baby,
Broke the lookin' glass
Seven years of bad luck,
The good things in your past
When you believe in things
That you don't understand,
Then you suffer,
Superstition aint the way
Hey
Very superstitious,
Wash your face and hands,
Rid me of the problem,
Do all that you can,
Keep me in a daydream,
Keep me goin' strong,
You don't wanna save me,
Sad is the soul
When you believe in things
That you don't understand,
Then you suffer,
Superstition ain't the way,
Yeh, yeh
Very superstitious,
Nothin' more to say,
Very superstitious,
The devil's on his way,
Thirteen month old baby,
Broke the lookin' glass,
Seven years of bad luck,
Good things in your past
When you believe in things

Excellent posts - keep them coming!
That is what a social /film site is for - NOT drama, gossip and hatred ;)
And to finish off for this evening. Dedicated to all you mothers out there. Don't know if it follows the instructions but I am sure I'll hear if it doesn't.
(No One Knows Me) Like The Piano
No one knows me like the piano in my mother's home
You would show me I have something, some people call a soul
And you drop-topped the sky, oh you arrived when I was three years old
No one knows me like the piano in my mother's home
You know I left, I flew the nest
And you know I won't be long
And in my chest you know me best
And you know I'll be back home
An angel by her side, oh, all the times I knew we couldn't cope
They said that it's her time, no tears in sight, I kept the feelings close
And you took hold of me and never, never, never let me go
'Cause no one knows me like the piano in my mother's home
In my mother's home

EUNOIA: Yes, I logged out to see what you were posting. I don't normally (as you may be aware) because I don't believe in this pan-blocking that is going on. You have your reasons but, put in simple terms, it is not good. I wanted to make sure that I wasn't posting the same things as you - a type of posting double jeopardy. I actually heard the song "backstabbers" the other day so it wasn't beyond the realms of possibilities.
I also wanted to say I think this is a great idea and I really liked some of your choices, both musically and lyrically. I have always been attracted to strong lyrics in any style be it folk, country, rock, hip hop. Here in Spain we only have the extreme commercial radio (Top 40) or the specialised station (Radio 3) with a lot of politics inbetween.
I really loved the Allesia Cara song - very honest. Although some are a bit strong especially the overuse of n*gga and b*tch. My ear is too sensitive for these terms - in moderation I can live with them.

@DemandingFemale S-S-double-double-U-to the V!
I remember discovering the cassette tape to SWV in my older sister's belongings she left behind when she moved away from home. I fell in love! Great tune that brought back some good memories - thanks for sharing ;)
@3UN01A I think I still have my original tape somewhere. I have a couple of their albums on CD, too. I really liked their '97 album Release Some Tension
First off,
Then we have,
& then the almighty,
And a little more...
With the most beautiful,
And then this is my song right here,
And this one reminds me of being a kid
And this one my partner says reminds him of me,
BTW, thanks for sharing Curtis, LOVE LOVE LOVE Curtis!
@nonamemanon This is a sweet addition - LOVE them all. Think I found my soul sistah ;) you're the best!
What's the Use?
You can love it, you can leave it
They'll say you're nothing without it
Don't let them keep you down
What if I don't need it? There's something about it
That just freaks me out
I just want another minute with it, f**k a little, what's the use?
Never superficial you gon' know it when it hit you
Get a little sentimental when I'm off the juice
Yeah, okay we colder than the breeze
But the breeze ain't flowin' like me, motherf**ker hol' up
You don't need to hol' up, yeah
And I can show you how it seem what it is what it truly might be
Nothing that you know of, you don't need to hol' up
I'm so above from beyond you take drugs to make it up
Way up where we on, space shuttle, Elon
Time we don't waste much, f**k and we wake up
Then have her sing just like Céline Dion
Catch me if you can but, you never catch me, damn

Let Me Down
Sometimes, I wouldn't mind if I was less important
Would you think about them all the time?
Wonder if you'll even notice in the morning
So where'd you go when you can't get to me
And you just can't control?
Sometimes, I wouldn't mind if I was less important
But I've got you to let me down
I've got you to let me down
Only you can understand why
I've got you to let me down
Yeah, yo, it's like
You've got me, I'm pondering that
Said, "I'll be back in a sec, I need to reflect"
But you swear it's been longer than that
Time is golden, time is thin
But time is rare, so we squander and that
I feel your pain when I hear your voice
So fix your tone, man, you're stronger than that
And you're, like, the strongest girl I know
Probably the strongest, minus my mum
Don't go wasting your loving on me
When I see tears run, I'm likely to run

Girlfriend
Chris!
I'm gone in a flick, but back in a second
With salted skin, rash for no reason
Boys are loading their arms, girls gasp with envy
F-f-for whom are they mimicking endlessly?
Same old sadness in small lumps on my jaw
For lusting after is the usual freak show
May your girl come, birdie die under this spur
F-f-f-fingers angrily sunk on the jugular, then girlfriend
Don't feel like a girlfriend
But lover
Damn, I'd be your lover
Girlfriend
Don't feel like a girlfriend
But lover
Damn, I'd be your lover (touché, touché yeah)
Yes sir, I am wet, for I abandoned my fame in the lake
Let's see now how fast you're breathing
And how long this will all take
Those who used to pass by me think they are baffling a liar
F-f**k is you? You don't even taste much better!
Came back steaming in sweats in the morning

I'm in heaven, when you smile
When you smile, when you smile
When you smile
And when you walk
Across the room
You make my heart go
Boom boom boom
Let it all hang out
Baby, let it all hang out
And every time
You look that way
Honey child, you make my day
Let it all hang out
Like the man said let it all hang out

A smooth social song from 1971
Inner City Blues (make me want to holler)
Rockets, moon shots
Spend it on the have-nots
Money, we make it
Before we see it, you take it
Oh, make you want to holler
The way they do my life
Make me want to holler
The way they do my life
This ain't living, this ain't living
No, no baby, this ain't living
No, no, no
Inflation no chance
To increase finance
Bills pile up sky high
Send that boy off to die
Make me want to holler
The way they do my life
Make me want to holler
The way they do my life
Hang ups, let downs
Bad breaks, set backs
Natural fact is
I can't pay my taxes
Make me want to holler
And throw up both my hands
Yeah, it makes me want to holler
And throw up both my hands
Crime is increasing
Trigger happy policing
Panic is spreading
God knows where we're heading
Mother, mother
Everybody thinks we're wrong
Who are they to judge us

You're laying waste to Hallowe'en
Holocene
Someway, baby, it's part of me, apart from me
You're laying waste to Halloween
You f**ked it friend, it's on its head, it struck the street
You're in Milwaukee, off your feet
And at once I knew I was not magnificent
Strayed above the highway aisle
(Jagged vacance, thick with ice)
I could see for miles, miles, miles
3rd and Lake it burnt away, the hallway
Was where we learned to celebrate
Automatic bought the years you'd talk for me
That night you played me 'Lip Parade'
Not the needle, nor the thread, the lost decree
Saying nothing, that's enough for me
And at once I knew I was not magnificent
Hulled far from the highway aisle
(Jagged vacance, thick with ice)
I could see for miles, miles, miles
Christmas night, it clutched the light, the hallow bright
Above my brother, I and tangled spines
We smoked the screen to make it what it was to be

And some Irish R&B from the master ...
Madame George
Down on Cyprus Avenue
With a childlike vision leaping into view
Clicking, clacking of the high heeled shoe
Ford and Fitzroy, Madame George
Marching with the soldier boy behind
He's much older now with hat on drinking wine
And that smell of sweet perfume comes drifting through
The cool night air like Shalimar
And outside they're making all the stops
The kids out in the street collecting bottle-tops
Gone for cigarettes and matches in the shops
Happy taken Madame George
That's when you fall
Whoa, that's when you fall
Yeah, that's when you fall
When you fall into a trance
Sitting on a sofa playing games of chance
With your folded arms and history books
You glance into the eyes of Madame George
And you think you found the bag
You're getting weaker and your knees begin to sag
In a corner playing dominoes in drag

Switching off with someone you love
Switching Off
Last of the men in hats hops off the coil
And a final scene unfolds inside
Deep in the rain of sparks behind his brow
Is a part replayed from a perfect day
Teaching her how to whistle like a boy
Love's first blush
Is this making sense?
What am I trying to say?
Early evening June
This room and a radio play
This I need to save
I choose my final thoughts today
Switching off with you
All the clocks give in
And the traffic fades
And the insects like a neon choir
The instant fizz
Connection made
And the curtains sigh
In time
With you
You, the only sense the world has ever made
Early evening June
This room and radio play
This I need to save
I choose my final scene today
Switching off
Ran to ground for a while there
But I came off pretty well
You, the only sense the world has ever made
This I need to save
A simple trinket locked away
I choose my final scene today

Harlem Shuffle
You move it to the left
Yeah, and you go for yourself
You move it to the right
Yeah, if it takes all night
Now take it kinda slow
With a whole lot of soul
Don't move it too fast
You make it last
You know scratch just like a monkey
Yeah you do real, yeah
You slide it to the limbo
Yeah, how low can you go?
Oh, come on baby
I don't want you to stumble now
You just groove it right here to the Harlem Shuffle
Oh, do the monkeyshiner
(Yeah, yeah, yeah do the harlem shuffle)
Hitch, hitch-hike baby
Across the floor
Whoa, whoa, whoa
I can't stand it no more
Now come on baby
Now get into your slide
We're gonna ride, ride, ride
Little pony, ride!
Yeah
Shake, shake, shake, shake a tailfeather, baby (whoo!)
Shake, shake, shake, shake a tailfeather, baby, one more time (whoo!)
Shake, shake, shake, shake, do the monkeyshine, baby

Listen baby, ain't no mountain high
Ain't no valley low, ain't no river wide enough baby
If you need me call me no matter where you are
No matter how far don't worry baby
Just call my name I'll be there in a hurry
You don't have to worry
'Cause baby there ain't no mountain high enough
Ain't no valley low enough
Ain't no river wide enough
To keep me from getting to you babe
Remember the day I set you free
I told you you could always count on me darling
From that day on, I made a vow
I'll be there when you want me
Some way, some how
'Cause baby there ain't no mountain high enough
Ain't no valley low enough
Ain't no river wide enough
To keep me from getting to you babe
Oh no darling

The last for today is another classic ...
Sympathy For the Devil
Please allow me to introduce myself
I'm a man of wealth and taste
I've been around for a long, long year
Stole many a man's soul to waste
And I was 'round when Jesus Christ
Had his moment of doubt and pain
Made damn sure that Pilate
Washed his hands and sealed his fate
Pleased to meet you
Hope you guess my name
But what's puzzling you
Is the nature of my game
I stuck around St. Petersburg
When I saw it was a time for a change
Killed the czar and his ministers
Anastasia screamed in vain
I rode a tank
Held a general's rank
When the blitzkrieg raged
And the bodies stank
Pleased to meet you
Hope you guess my name, oh yeah
Ah, what's puzzling you
Is the nature of my game, oh yeah
I watched with glee
While your kings and queens
Fought for ten decades
For the gods they made
I shouted out
Who killed the Kennedys?
