This might be Clint Eastwood's best movie, it was his own favourite according to his biography. It certainly added a new dimension to westerns.
The cast has some great actors; Morgan Freeman, Frances Fisher, Richard Harris, and Gene Hackman. And they performed together perfectly.
The camera work was excellent, stunning open-air shots and subtly-lit night scenes.
But what makes it is the story, more complex than any other shoot-the-baddy western I can remember. A reformed killer (Eastwood) reluctantly returns to his old ways and involves his old partner (Freeman), who had also settled down. The philosophical discussions between them and a youngster just starting the same career are wonderful. Women's rights are also at the forefront of the plot.
Gene Hackman's role as the bad sheriff was also very good.
Great watch, and food for thought.

I have seen this film before, that will tell you just how great of a movie I think it is. And I got some insight into what Eastwood was trying to say, this time. That the Wild West was pretty wild, and there was probably a lot of crazy killing, gun slingers, brave lawmen, psychopaths and on and on! And out of all that happened most of it was BS, but some of it was just exactly as you would imagine, maybe even worse! In my 74 years on Earth two good friends were shot and killed in separate shootings. I disarmed 3 men at different times, and I came within a hairs breath of killing one man in hand to hand combat, but I was lucky he gave-up! So I am blessed, I never killed anyone! Doc Blake

Fantastic!!! One of Eastwood`s Best and on the Classic list of Westerns. All Star cast. A many a time watch!! Hard to believe its 26 yrs. old. Still a film that will never die. BRAVO Clint!! 5/5.

Who does westerns better than Clint Eastwood? No one. Unforgiven pulls off the blinders, and shows us what the west was REALLY like, warts and all. No glamorizing here. It's full of ignorant selfish people. Dangerous, uncaring, poor, desperate people. Willing to do anything to survirve. That's the position Eastwood finds himself in. He's an ex gunslinger and a farmer with two kids, and a dead wife. A BAD farmer. He's broke, and no prospects, so when the opportunity comes along to make some money, he takes it. Morgan Freeman agrees to go with him, but it ends badly for him. Gene Hackman is probably the best actor in Hollywood. I saw an interview with Morgan Freeman about Hackman, and Freeman said that when they played a scene in this movie, and Hackman told him how babdly he was going to hurt him, Freeman said.."I BELIEVED him. It was a visceral reaction." That's how good Gene Hackman is. Kudos to Eastwood for giving women a voice in this movie. They're the reason that all of the action occurs. ...

it's pretty slow all the way, but there's....just something good about this movie. i do recommend. it's not my favorite clint film(the good, the bad and the ugly is my fav.) but it's still solid none the less. 3 of 4 stars very good.
