Storyline: |
From the sight of a police officer this movie depicts the life in New York's infamous South Bronx. In the center is "Fort Apache", as the officers call their police station, which really seems like an outpost in enemy's country. The story follows officer Murphy, who seems to be a tuff cynic, but in truth he's a moralist with a sense for justice. |

6.75 out of 10.
This gritty cop drama served as inspiration and blueprint for the TV show, Hill Street Blues, and its ilk. Film is about the law enforcers assigned in the downtrodden title police precinct located in the seedy and crime-riddled side of the Bronx. Film mainly focuses on 3rd generation and jaded cop John Murphy (Newman) and his young partner Andrew Corelli (Wahl) as they execute their jobs in maintaining a semblance of law and order in their problematic jurisdiction. The arrival of new captain Dennis Connolly (Asner), who is determined to put the police station in order and reduce criminality, put additional pressure on Murphy, Corelli and their peers. Film had a fresh look on cop life when it was initially released, but looks awfully like a dated TV movie now. Newman’s star power and the strong performances balance the script’s predictability, lack of a cohesive central theme, and episodic frame. Film has plenty of storylines to cover—most engaging is Murphy’s love affair with drug-using nurse (Ticotin), and weakest involves a cop-executioner prostitute (Grier) that goes nowhere. ...
