Remake of 1974 movie. The main character is not a good cast as Bruce Wills. He just doesn't look the part, you need a more innocent looking man. If you want both movies, watch this one first because i don't think you really would like it the other way around. If you just look for a good, easy to wacth, action movie, you are set.
The 1970's Death Wish book was filmed in '74 with Charles Bronson in the vigilante role, and started a whole range of revenge fantasies. The 1974 film was good but led to a series of progressively worsening sequels where an aggrieved wimp takes on all the baddies.
This remake with Bruce Willis is an okay watch if you haven't seen the original, but really does not compare.
The story has changed slightly to make our hero a surgeon who can fix his own bullet wounds, rather than the original architect. Otherwise it is a poor remake.
Loved it from start to finish. 5/5 MY POV
Not over the top and keeps you glued right to the end. 7/10
this was a great film, good action and for sure a one time watch. If you're a Bruce Willis fan this film is for you, enjoy. 4/5
The scene, by all rights, ought to be a nasty bit of business: a middle-aged white avenger in a hoodie, popping out of nowhere to blow a black drug dealer away. But that “last customer” line plays like an old Schwarzenegger kiss-off, and the lawless killing is followed by equal-time commentary from black and white talk-radio hosts — the film’s explicit attempt to defuse any racist overtones.
Filled with lolbertarian 'ideology-placement'. It's like an Ayn Rand movie..
There was a lot of comparison between this movie and the original Death Wish with Charles Bronson but, other than the stories resembling each other there weren't many similarities. The New York of Bronson's time is gone and part of history. The clothes, the lingo, even the style of filmmaking is part of that time. I like Bronson a lot, but Bruce Willis just updated the franchise.
His calm and collected demeanor is similar to Bronson's and while NYC has, for the most part, calmed down, Chicago's southside is one of the hotspots for crime in the present. If any place needs cleaning up, it's the southside.
Another part of this movie that might be surprising is Eli Roth's restraint. While he's not known for being family friendly, this movie is a lot less gory than some of his others (check out Hostel or Green Inferno if you want to see gore). There are a couple scenes that were graphic but they could have been much much worse.
Bruce Willis is perfect for this. ... Old enough to be the overprotective dad, he's still one of the best action heroes and Dwayne Johnson just seems too...nice for a role like this. Read moreLess
NO ONE could do Death Wish BETTER than CHARLES BRONSON (He set the standard), SORRY .OK acting. Don't know how these types of movies make it just on film and why the actors accept their roles unless they need money. For the recent films Willis has done (Reprisal ,Acts of Violence, Death Wish, The Bombing ). , I am NOT IMPRESSED with his choices Which seems; that his once GREAT CAREER is at an END. A lesson for current and upcoming Actors; Choose your Scripts Wisely and DO NOT JUST SETTLE 4 just anything,it will affect how U R REMEMBERED!
I enjoyed this movie. It held my attention throughout it. Bruce played this brilliantly. He was a perfect pick. Vincent D'Onofrio s great also. He's one of the greats, IMO. Then you throw in Eli Roth as director and you have a high quality movie. 4 of 5.
First of all its an Eli Roth film (Directed) & i knew there's going to be blood and gore like the Cabin Fever & Hostel (which i praised the story), but this film is an action film (aka Revenge) starring none other than Bruce Willis which is quite cool enough to act as Paul Kersey. I'd say for those who want an action scenes apart from hitman(like John Wick) action film or superhero(like Deadpool) acton film then this is the movie you must see.[SPOILER]a simple doctor who learn how to shoot through youtube tutorials thats sound common and yes the cops in this movies are **sholes Eli Roth has done his job though the critics reviewed negative reviews, this happen because of the story & screenplay...i'm not satisfied enough with the story but i totally enjoyed every single scenes of the family relationship and actions delivered by Roth. i rated 4.5 out of 5 .
Ive seen a few negative comments about this film ! WHY? I we thought it was a good film... Its a good violent thriller. Yeah its sometimes very dark but, Thats the story! If you dont go into this film with the intention of rating it to the original Death Wish then i think you have more chance of enjoying... Eli Roth is good and Bruce was good.
Death Wish is quite possibly the blandest action movie I've ever seen. It doesn't do anything to wow the audience in the script, no particular action set piece and really, no stakes. But for the most part, it's competent, until you get to the performances, Bruce Willis especially is just so bad, I just couldn't feel sorry for him in the film at all, as he was never given any truly emotional scenes. Death Wish isn't worth your time, it's bland, and just straight up bad in some places. A painfully average action movie with some cool aspects but a whole lot of problems. The concept of the movie is a good one but this movie doesn’t do anything interesting with it. Not a bad remake of one of the most iconic films of the 70's.
Pretty good imo, his best in years. If you like this check out Kevin Bacon's Death Sentence.
@Nopey Just checked out the Death Sentence trailer. Looks great, thanks for the tip.
It was ok for me and didn’t see the original so I cannot compare it. But for me it’s still good to watch and entertaining.
@X-Storm Try the 1st one!! It makes this one look like used toilet paper after a attack of the runs!!
very good movie well worth watching 8/10
Good movie from Bruce not his best thou but he did a excellent job and nailed it.
@Kakarot This was trash!! Check out the 1st one for a better movie with class!!
Movie was okay but a little tame for Bruce Willis. Should of went with a different name, Charles Bronson owns "Death Wish" like Stallone owns "Rocky".
I just wanted to post how much this impressed me. I'll be the first to say, I wasn't expecting too much, and it exceeded my expectations.
The acting was great (although that was to be expected with the cast), and I saw a post saying that it dragged a little. Well, I believe it needed that to stick with it being a proper story. They could easily have made it a blood and gore revenge fest, especially with Eli Roth as the director. They didn't do it, and I'm glad. It kept me enthralled pretty much all the way through.
It's not gonna win any Oscars, of course, but as stand alone remakes go, this is one of the best. Well made, well acted, violent enough without being overly crude. Not much they could have done better in my opinion. I give it an 8/10. That's not me being mean either. The only reason it's not a 9 is because I wasn't a huge fan of the subject matter. If this was a horror it would be a 9.
Same old revenge thing. 6/10.
Well, it was pretty run of the mill, screenplay by numbers and average acting for the most part...
However, someone had the brilliant idea of casting the ever watchable always worth seeing Bruce in the role.
Without him, it wouldn’t be worth even mentioning but like Mel Gibson and Sly, there’s something magnetic about their performances.
I enjoyed it more than the original but agree that it dragged in the middle a bit.
It will never be an equaliser but 3.5/5 from me and hopefully the next instalment will be even better
I actually think I like this remake better than the original. Color me surprised.
It was aiight nothing too special. Good acting. average revenge story. I would rate it about 7 out 0f 10~ one time watch for me. Some decent actors in this movie!
This is a good old action pactec Bruce Willis movie
While I still think the original was better, they did a decent job with this remake. The movie had good action scenes. Adding Vincent D'Onofrio to the cast with Bruce Willis was a nice touch. It felt to me like the movie dragged a little in the beginning. Overall not a bad watch.
Well I like Bruce Willis movies because even when he's just going through the motions he still has enough screen presence to lift a dull flik out of the gutter. Hence the fact he's a top star. And so this film might not be as good as its predecessor but at least it stars Bruce and so in that respect it's worth checking out. And must say it's quite good. Maybe not as fresh as the original, certainly not as socially relevant as it was back then when muggers ruled the night stalking the streets, but setting that aside it's been updated somewhat and to that extent it works today, albeit not as valid as the first with Bronson. Anyway, for what it's worth I award this 2 cocoa-nuts out of 5 with one extra bonus cocoa-nut for Bruce Willis.
Not a bad remake from the last 1974 film starring Charles Bronson.
Having never seen the Original, I can only say I thought this was a pretty good movie , would I watch it again, probably not......I am now interested to see the original one.
Watchable, that's about it.A mediocre remake of a movie made over 40 years ago and the original was a lot better.
he is no Charles bronson
I always enjoy seeing Bruce Willis in any film, you can almost always expect some serious action no matter what ..And in this case the 20th century" Death Wish" was not bad all. Now I'm aware individuals may have been expecting a Charles Bronson destruction , but Bruce got the job done. I have to say it was a bit unusual though seeing Bruce Willis in a role were he does not already know how to kick assets But the story line was on point almost a flashback of the film "Taken" Overall it was super A+ to have Vincent D'Onofrio casted in the film he is superb, again overall it may have been a 10star film for me if Bruce Willis would have Hippy Ki Yayed his way through the film like in some of the Die Hards this film would have been dynamic! Hopefully the sequel if there is one..will be even better..very interesting film, keeps you guessing whats next, great watch for movie night. I rate this 20th Century "Die Hard" a 8/10★ Click Play!
this movie was a good film the old one is much better
this movie was ok
Boring boring Willis doesnt act anymore he just goes through the motions instead of putting some oomph into his movie and other movies,he has lost me I was hoping he would come alive but no he is a lazy sod.Compared to Bronson he is a dunce in adunce of amovie what a waste of money to watch I walked out after 25 minutes asked for my money back which I received.
Liked the original much better, but this was a Decent flick! Only complaint, too much baldness in this movie, would have been much better with a hairy actor say "Tom Selleck" just sayin.
Why is it that always when there is a crap movie like that tomb raider rubbish does well at the boxoffice instead, good films like death wish does not get the credit that it deserves.
@Lorenz8 That tomb raider blows for sure.
@Lorenz8 Good marketing and... like pop music.
As a guy who paid $1.25 to see the movie in 1974 I`m disappointed. After 44 years I expected a better take. The only thing I came away with from this movie is sore eyes, from the picture quality, and a new use for brake fluid. This is a turn around from the first and its not worth your time. This one was gory and bloody, of course, but did`nt have the same feel, keep you interested feeling, or good acting, that Charles Bronson and Vincent Gardenia did in the 1`st version. Brian Garfield, the author of the book "Death Wish" 1972, is probably loading his own gun to track down and kill the people who butchered his story. Shine this, "Older Crowd"!!! You`ll be glad you did. 1/5
@PAUL58 Remake or not, it was a really terrible film with Bruce Willis just standing around trying to look intimidating and only succeeding in looking confused, to me. I realise others liked it, and I'm actually really pleased for them, I think they're lucky. For me, I felt that the trailers showed the best bits, all strung together and out of context. I was truly disappointed and will probably never risk a Bruce Willis film again. As you wrote, my eyes hurt!
@PAUL58 Agreed; although wasn't even born yet when the Bronson one's came out, they were far beyond the quality of this one.
Even the similar movie with Michael Caine from a couple years ago, Harry Brown, was better than this as a 'Death Wish' remake.
This was typical Americana; an enjoyable action movie as action movies go; but sorely lacks the 'Death Wish' magic of the originals that are this thing's namesake.
I wish Hollywood would stop making remakes, and just try coming up with original stories and stuff. Of course, seeing the garbage that's come out in the past several years, I guess all they can do to make money is remake good movies.
@quinngirl Harry Brown was absolutely stellar and really portrayed an older man in grief. It was actually filmed where Michael Caine was reared! I loved it!
@quinngirl I love Harry Brown, Michael Caine.
The movie was ok - Charles Bronsen's was better. Be prepared for the HollyWood Hoplophobe tidbits though like that full automatic AR-15 that Dr. Kersey (Willis) just waltzed into the Jolly Roger gun shop and bought "today", sans NFA tax stamp (which the police sargeant didn't bat an eye at). And this in heavily gun-controlled Chicago to boot!
@Paladin* I agree with you, anytime they can throw a seize guns moment they most certainly will. God bless the founding fathers.
@Paladin* Typical Liberal!!!
@Swan007 With all due respect to your commment, it does not in the least give an opinion of the film itself which is what the comment section in intentended to .... unless you care to expand upon why your brief, yet unexlaatory comment can acuuallly jusify hate-mongering, but an exduacacated would wager to say 'no, it doesn't'. Have a great day and loosen up. Lighten up. It's purely
@Swan007 I'm not positive, but I think that the use of the word "Hoplophobe" would make him a conservative and not a liberal. Especially given the context that it's being used to to look down upon Hollywood filmakers. But I do find it amusing that you made this mistake. It would be like if that guy in Charlotsville Virginia had run over some of his Nazi friends instead of Heather Heyer. But then he could also be just a normal person. You know, someone who hasn't gone to the trouble of defining who they are as a person based upon whether they get their news from CNN or FOX.
@PaddyWhack I gave Swan007 the benefit of the doubt and assumed he was referring to Willis. And for the record, I read news voraciously, not just a single outlet.
@Paladin* Thats cool. You are a good man.
This is one of Bruce Willis' best Movies. The story was entertaining and i liked the cast.
@◦•●◉✿♡Momof3αηgєℓѕ♡✿◉●•◦ Vincent D'Onofrio was completely underutilized for this movie. Waste of his time and talent to say the least.
Everyone else was alright. Kinda band, one-dimensional characters, though.
Brooding 'hero' character is broody; bad guys are stereotypically bad guy-esque.
Teen victim girl is victim girl.
Strong wife killed off so as not to change the dynamic of the movie.
I will Not be watching this as I find the acting of Bruce Willis is so lazy he has lost his charisma there is no energy in his socalled acting. I put him in the same category as Cruise and will smith all their movies are B grade in my eyes.
@Sicario Maybe you have daddy issues !!!
@Swan007 Not only is your comment rude and uncalled for, it's irrelevant. The reviewer said nothing demeaning or condescending or psychologically unsound. Please refrain from such comments in the future, they are really inappropriate.
Even through it's a remake of Charles Bronson's "DEATH WISH" Bruce Willis does a great job with it. Vincent D'Onofrio is always good in any role he plays. Very worth while and entertaining movie still to this day. 5/5
I love Vincent D'Onofrio, Bruce did better in this than the last three movies he made.3/5
good movie. alittle slow at first. not a remake but a new take on the story. worth watching
it was just ok, watchin it once was enough
Great movie no complaints, Brucie style ...
@GreaserTruck I agree I enjoyed, I like Bruce n I didn't look at this as a remake, it's a totally different movie and I was a fan of the 80's Death Wish series.
Yes it is hard to do something like this when you've been hanging off of shy scrappers and jet airplanes like Bruce has done over the years.
Good try Charles Bronson was a great actor, but he is not Bruce Willis nor was this was made in 2018.
I didn't care for this at all. Bruce Willis seems to barely be able to stare and try attempt to look pensive and intimidating, but fails achieving even that miserably. The pacing is completely lopsided with way too much time on Bruce trying to look stunned (I suppose), but only achieving a look of boredom. The original was cheesy, but creepy, and the pacing was much better. This may have been the last time I'll chance watching a Bruce Willis-based film. He's really lost what edge he did have (he was a cheeky kind of hero) as this is just too straight edged. I feel this film needed someone more like Keanu who can do the non-emotional type to a tee. That's just my opinion on this copy and this film.
@ you are not wrong
@ Spot on review.
Not sure about Keanu being in this role, though. Maybe use Liam Neeson again, and just call it Taken...what are we up to now, 6? 7?
Make sure you guys watch the original first. That freaked me out as a teen, I guess I was too sheltered to think gangs acted like that.
@MPA2000 Death wish will always mean Charles bronson to me. The originals were over the top good.
Sounds like a good one, I hope lol
