"Im Westen nichts Neues" (All Quiet on the Western Front) of 2022 is the third filming of the world famous
novel (1928) by Erich Maria Remarque, who himself was a German veteran in World War I (although only one month).
In 1930 the novel was adapted by director Lewis Milestone in a movie of the same name that won two Academy Awards. In 1979 it was adapted again for CBS Television by director Delbert Mann and won a golden globe and an Emmy.
The Nazis slandered the novel and the author and the book - although having been sold many million times in over 50 languages- was banned and burned in Nazi Germany.
Till today it counts as one of the most famous anti-war novels of all times.
The Netflix version of 2022 premiered on the Toronto International Film Festival in September.
It outperforms its predecessors in terms of shocking visuals and the temptations of CGI, but still doesn`t quite reach the dramatic banality of the 1930 Milestone version.

Yet a clear recommendation for all supporting peace and all that feel tempted by nationalism. Especially for the latter.

This is one amazing movie. The cinematography is stunning, the battle scenes are terrifying.( There is one particular scene involving tanks and flamethrowers I cannot unsee). Innocence dies in the maw of hell. I read somewhere that this is the first version of this made in German. It's tipped for an Oscar for foreign film and I think it stands a great chance of winning. Everything about this is beautifully crafted. It certainly earns a place in the pantheon of great antiwar movies. Highly Recommended 8/10

@filtersweep I forgot to mention, there is an English DUB of this - Avoid it at all costs it ruins the movie after the first five minutes...

This movie was captured with painful intensity. The performance illuminates the misery of a young soldier in 1917 and this war has stolen their youth. Watching this movie it explores the powerlessness of soldiers on the front line.WW I was a gruesome, protracted conflict. It probably could have been fought at the negotiation table. I liked the movie a lot.

This movie is really slow and boring. In the first hour of the movie the main character literally only shoots his rifle once. I tried to watch it 3 times on separate occasions and kept getting bored or falling asleep. 1917 is way better than this, and that movie was just above average.

There doesn't seem to be a clear storyline. They just pick a random guy and follow his life in the army. The editing makes each scene appear so random. In 1 scene he is in the trenches, suddenly in the next scene he is riding on the back of a truck and stealing a chicken from a farm, next scene he is peeling potatoes in a random town and trying to talk to women, next scene he is in a random barn and drinks water from a water pump. It's just so random. Instead of a movie, I felt like I was looking at this guy's photo album from WW1 but in video format.
